Khamenei’s Ringed Hand Becomes Symbol Of Defiance At Tehran’s Azadi Square

The CSR Journal Magazine

A towering installation of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s ringed hand has been unveiled at Tehran’s Azadi Square, signifying a tribute that has rapidly transformed into a prominent symbol of defiance in Iran. This significant monument comes as the country observes a week-long series of state funeral processions for its former Supreme Leader, who passed away following an airstrike on February 28. The sculpture was constructed in an impressive four days and is now perceived as a message of resilience and national unity.

Azadi Square, an essential location in the history of Iran’s Islamic Revolution, now hosts this striking artwork, which bears Khamenei’s distinctive ring. This ring had become a fundamental identifier for him among supporters, particularly highlighted in the context of the recent airstrike. As Khamenei’s legacy continues to resonate with many, the installation has become an emotional focal point for the grieving populace.

The public response to this installation has been immense, with reports indicating that millions have gathered to pay their respects. Many observers believe that the artwork encapsulates the collective feeling of loss and the enduring commitment of the citizens to the legacy of Khamenei.

Historic Funeral Procession Draws Large Crowds

The Iranian authorities have characterised the ongoing funerals as the largest state funeral in the nation’s history. On July 3, hundreds of thousands of mourners converged along the procession route from Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla to Azadi Square, showcasing the public’s outpouring of grief. Mourners, dressed in black, waved Iranian flags and held portraits of Khamenei alongside those of his son and presumed successor, Mojtaba Khamenei.

As the procession made its way through the capital, chants of various slogans filled the air, further reinforcing the show of support for the Islamic Republic. The atmosphere of mourning was palpable, with mourners draped in the colours of the Iranian flag—red, white, and green—converging in a significant show of solidarity and appreciation for the leadership Khamenei provided over his 36-year rule.

Before the public procession, Khamenei’s coffin was exhibited for senior Iranian officials and foreign dignitaries to pay their respects. It was later displayed in a glass enclosure alongside the coffins of family members, including his daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and 14-month-old granddaughter.

Final Homage to Be Paid Across Cities

Following the extensive public mourning in Tehran, Khamenei’s remains are set to be transported to Qom, a city renowned as the heart of Iran’s Shiite hierarchy, for further ceremonies. This will occur on July 7, immediately after the central Tehran procession on July 6.

On July 8, the remains will be flown to Iraq for ceremonies in the revered Shiite cities of Najaf and Kerbala. This journey is anticipated to draw similar crowds and expressions of reverence from the communities in those regions. The remains will then return to Iran, where another procession is planned in Mashhad on July 9, marking the culmination of a significant period of mourning and reflection across the nation.

This extensive sequence of events highlights not only the profound impact Khamenei had on Iranian society but also indicates the deep-seated sentiments surrounding his leadership and the legacy he leaves behind.
