Kavinder Gupta Sworn In as Himachal Pradesh Governor

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kavinder Gupta was sworn in as the 30th Governor of Himachal Pradesh on March 10, emphasizing his intention to act as a conduit between the central government and the state. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia. Gupta outlined his priorities for the role, which include tourism development and promoting youth empowerment.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Gupta, who previously served as the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh for approximately seven and a half months, remarked on the cultural similarities shared between Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. He expressed his commitment to collaborate with various stakeholders, independent of party affiliations, to advance the development of Himachal Pradesh.

Gupta highlighted the significant potential for tourism in the state, particularly emphasizing the opportunities within religious tourism. He stated, “There is great scope for tourism in the region, especially religious tourism. We will try to work on this in the future.”

In addition to tourism, Gupta addressed the environmental importance of the state, recognizing its green cover as a vital factor in environmental conservation. He remarked, “Green Himachal is contributing greatly to environmental protection.”

Highlighting the role of the youth in national development, Gupta noted that India’s demographic dividend should be directed towards entrepreneurship. He mentioned, “As the Prime Minister says, nearly 65 percent of India’s population is youth. For the dream of Viksit Bharat by 2047, I want the youth to become job providers rather than job seekers.”

Recalling his experiences in Ladakh, Gupta noted his extensive travels across the region, including visits to remote border villages. He indicated his plans to undertake a detailed tour of Himachal Pradesh within the next three to four months, intending to visit twelve districts.

Furthermore, Gupta addressed pressing social issues, including drug abuse, underscoring the need for education, technology, and sports to be leveraged for youth development. He stated, “Drug menace is a serious issue, and education is important. Technology and sports should be used to guide youth in the right direction. This is not the responsibility of the government alone. Society as a whole must work together.”

Reinforcing his governance philosophy, Gupta reiterated his intent to operate beyond party politics. During the swearing-in ceremony at Lok Bhawan, he also highlighted the significance of the national song, citing the need to educate people about “Vande Mataram.” The complete version of the song was played at the event, symbolizing a commitment to national identity.
