Karan Johar Shares Emotional Response to “Raakh”

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karan Johar, the acclaimed filmmaker, has recently expressed profound admiration for the series Raakh, describing it as both deeply disturbing and brilliant. After viewing the series, Johar felt an immediate need to share his reflections, despite attempting to take a break from social media. He indicated that the show left a lasting impact on him, lingering in his thoughts long after he finished watching it.

The director, aged 54, articulated his feelings in a detailed note on Instagram, where he stated that the finale of Raakh resonated with him on multiple levels. Johar explained that he felt “deeply disturbed” after the final episode aired late at night, particularly as it struck him not only as a viewer but also in his role as a parent and member of society.

In his post, Johar remarked on the darker themes the series explores, highlighting that it delves into the more unsettling aspects of humanity. He emphasised that no personal traumas or justifications can mitigate the impact of succumbing to one’s inner demons.

Praise for Direction and Performances in Raakh

Karan Johar took the opportunity to commend director Prosit Roy for his impressive storytelling approach. He characterised the filmmaking as powerful and devoid of manipulation, profoundly invoking human emotions without resorting to artificiality. Johar expressed particular appreciation for Roy’s craft, noting that it significantly contributed to the series’ overall impact.

However, what resonated most with Johar were the performances delivered by the lead cast. He specifically acknowledged the work of Sonali Bendre and Aamir Bashir, labelling their portrayals as “career-defining.” Johar was particularly moved by their characterisation of grieving parents facing overwhelming tragedy, allowing them to embody their roles fully.

In addition to praising Bendre and Bashir, Johar also recognised Ali Fazal’s “exceptional” performance, along with a nod to Akash Makhija and Ramandeep Yadav for their contributions to the series. He expressed appreciation for the team at Prime Video for their support in bringing this project to fruition.

Overview and Background of Raakh

Raakh revisits a notable historical event from nearly five decades ago, specifically the Ranga-Billa case, which had a significant impact on the nation. The series is set in late-1970s Delhi and follows Sub-Inspector Jayprakash, portrayed by Ali Fazal, who is tasked with investigating a progressively darker case. As the plot unfolds, the series delves into the emotional struggles faced by families involved in the investigation, along with the increasing pressures exerted by the ongoing enquiry.

Under the direction and executive production of Prosit Roy, Raakh showcases a narrative crafted by Anusha Nandakumar and Sandeep Saket, who also co-directed the series. The dialogues were developed by Ayush Trivedi, reflecting the intricacies of the characters and situation. The series has been produced by Endemol Shine India in collaboration with BhaDiPa.

Raakh premiered on June 12, indicating a keen interest in revisiting historical narratives and the emotional ramifications associated with them. Conclusively, Karan Johar encapsulated the series as “devastating and brilliant,” expressing his doubt about recovering from its emotional effects in the near future.
