‘Kala Hiran’ Row: Delhi High Court Seeks Response From Salman Khan

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi High Court has sought a response from Bollywood actor Salman Khan regarding a plea aimed at suspending his case against the film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy. This development comes as the court seeks clarity on the ongoing legal conflict between the actor and the filmmakers. Justice Anup Jairam Bhambhani issued this notice on Tuesday, prompting further examination of the situation.

The filmmakers contend that the legal issues raised by Khan are already being addressed in a previous case initiated by him. They assert that this new petition constitutes parallel litigation concerning the same cinematic project. Producer Amit Jani has opposed Khan’s request to halt the film’s release and its associated promotional material.

Khan’s legal representation argues that the actor is entitled to protect his personality rights, a claim that has previously led to an interim order in his favour in December 2025. The actor subsequently filed for specific protection against Kala Hiran, with this application still pending in court.

Filmmakers’ Defence and Allegations

The filmmakers have maintained that Kala Hiran is not a biopic of Salman Khan, thereby arguing that he lacks the grounds to employ personality rights to prevent them from portraying public events related to the blackbuck case. Specifically, they have noted that the film is still in production and has not yet received certification from the censor board.

Despite the filmmakers’ assertions, Khan has accused them of attempting to exploit the controversy for publicity, potentially damaging his reputation in the process. The court’s latest notice does not resolve the dispute; rather, it serves as an indication that Khan’s response will be evaluated as the proceedings continue.

Previous Court Orders and Developments

The legal tensions between Khan and the makers of Kala Hiran escalated significantly in July when the Delhi High Court mandated the removal of the film’s teaser along with related social media content. This decision was a direct result of Khan’s objections. Following this order, the filmmakers stressed that their current production stage had yet to reach completion, complicating the narrative surrounding the film’s impending release.

The ongoing dispute highlights broader issues concerning personality rights in the entertainment industry, specifically when individuals believe their likeness or stories are being exploited without permission. As the legal proceedings unfold, the court’s forthcoming deliberations will play a crucial role in determining the trajectory of both Khan’s case and the future of Kala Hiran.

As the situation develops, stakeholders in the film industry and the public will be closely monitoring the responses and decisions made by the courts. This legal battle underscores the complexities involved in balancing creative expression and the personal rights of individuals associated with documented events or characters portrayed in cinema.
