Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar Alleges Twenty TMC MPs Seek NDA Alignment

The CSR Journal Magazine

Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s assertion that approximately twenty members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are inclined to separate from the party and join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has stirred significant unrest in West Bengal’s political landscape. Dastidar, a seasoned politician associated with Mamata Banerjee since 1984, accused the TMC leadership of deteriorating governance and disconnect with the electorate. In an interview with India Today, she stated, “We are twenty of us who are dissatisfied with the functioning of our party inside the Lok Sabha and on the ground in the state of West Bengal.”

In her comments, Dastidar mentioned that the dissident MPs have already alerted the Speaker of their intention to sit independently while seeking an alliance with the NDA. She emphasised the mandate received from the people of West Bengal, which she claimed reflects a clear verdict against the current administration, highlighting issues of anarchy and misgovernance. Dastidar asserted, “We have decided. Twenty of us. We have written to the Honorable Speaker that we want to be a part of the NDA.”

Furthermore, Dastidar, who had previously resigned from the TMC in May, indicated that a merger with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could be a future consideration. While she refrained from definitively stating the group’s intentions, she acknowledged, “The possibility remains, but let us see what happens,” when questioned about the potential for a formal alignment with the BJP.

Rebel MPs and Party Dynamics

Reports have emerged suggesting that several discontented TMC leaders have recently met with senior BJP officials, including Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. Amid discussions about the reasons behind the rebellion, Dastidar dismissed claims that the movement stemmed from opportunism or electoral defeats. She reflected on her long-standing allegiance to Mamata Banerjee and her commitment to the party through numerous electoral challenges.

“I started with her in the year 1984. I lost four elections with her, or rather I think five elections till 2005, but I was with her till today,” Dastidar stated, seemingly defending her motives against accusations of opportunistic behaviour. She recounted the violence faced throughout her political journey, noting her struggles and hardships endured while serving the party.

Dastidar cited the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital as a critical turning point in her perception of the party’s governance. She expressed her disillusionment by describing the incident as “intolerable” and regretted not speaking out sooner, fearing it could affect the party’s position before critical elections.

Concerns Over Governance and Allegations Denied

Dastidar clarified that her objections were not personal but stemmed from a broader dissatisfaction with governance within West Bengal. She articulated concerns regarding the state of education, healthcare, and the film industry, asserting, “What happened to the film industry? What happened to the education side? What happened on the health side?” These issues, she implied, contributed to her decision to align with the NDA.

Rejecting allegations of coercion or financial inducements from BJP leaders, Dastidar categorically stated, “Not at all. Not at all.” She further asserted, “Not a single paise has crossed between the honourable MPs and the Bharatiya Janata Party, not one rupee,” emphasising that the rebellion was based on ideological differences rather than external pressures.

While awaiting a response from the Speaker regarding their request, Dastidar revealed the rebel MPs had no intention of rejoining the TMC. She expressed frustration with the party’s current actions and reiterated their determination to work independently for the country’s development. When asked about advice for Mamata Banerjee, Dastidar replied, “Who am I to dictate terms,” while noting the leadership’s disconnect with the electorate.
