Jharkhand Woman Kills Husband Dumps Body in Well Over Property Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a chilling murder case from Jharkhand’s Chanho area, a woman was arrested along with her relatives for allegedly killing her husband and burying his body in a well to hide the crime. The murder remained unsolved for nearly six months before police cracked the case, revealing a dark tale of property dispute and betrayal.

Missing Complaint Triggers Investigation

The case came to light on October 7 when Rahul Yadav, a resident of Varanasi, lodged a complaint at Chanho police station. He reported that his father, Rambali Yadav, who had been living with his second wife in Badhaiya village for the past 12 years, had been unreachable for over six months. Fearing foul play, he urged the police to investigate as reported by India Today.

Taking the complaint seriously, Ranchi SSP formed a special investigation team under SP (Rural) Praveen Pushkar and Khilari DSP. During the probe, Rambali’s second wife, Champa Oraon alias Champa Devi, came under suspicion due to her unusual behavior. She was placed under surveillance and later detained for questioning.

Shocking Confession and Body Recovery

Under interrogation, Champa confessed to plotting the murder with her relative Vishnu Oraon and others, including two minors. The motive was a dispute over money, Rambali had sold a plot of land and sent the proceeds to his first wife and children in Varanasi, angering Champa.

In a well-planned attack, the group allegedly shot Rambali and dumped his body in a disused well located in a nearby field. They then used a JCB machine to fill the well with soil in an attempt to erase all evidence. Acting on her confession, police excavated the well under the supervision of a magistrate and recovered Rambali’s decomposed body. It was sent to RIMS Ranchi for post-mortem.

Four Arrested, Minors Detained

Within 48 hours, police arrested Champa, Vishnu Oraon, and two other adult suspects. Two minors involved in the crime were taken into custody. Authorities also seized the country-made pistol used in the murder, live cartridges, and two motorcycles. The police are preparing the charge sheet and continuing further investigation.

Statement of Police

“Considering the seriousness of the crime, under the direction of the Senior Superintendent of Police, Ranchi, a special investigation team was formed under the leadership of the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Khalari, Ranchi, as per the instructions of the Superintendent of Police, Rural. The team took swift action and conducted an in-depth investigation into the incident, keeping a close watch on the activities of the missing person’s alleged wife, which were found to be suspicious. Subsequently, during the investigation, it came to light that the missing person’s wife, in collusion with her relatives, had murdered her husband due to a dispute over land money and had disposed of his body by throwing it into a well in a field, which was later filled using a JCB machine.”

“Based on the accused’s indication, in the presence of the appointed magistrate and the deceased’s family members, the body was recovered from the well in the field and sent to RIMS, Ranchi, for postmortem. Within 48 hours of receiving the information, a total of 06 accused involved in the case were arrested and sent to judicial custody.”

Motive of the murder stemmed from a dispute over land sale proceeds that Rambali had sent to his first family, enraging his second wife.
