Jairam Ramesh, the General Secretary in charge of communications for the Congress party, made a strong statement on September 29, 2026, reiterating the party’s demands regarding electoral issues. This announcement came during a Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in New Delhi, which saw participation from prominent leaders including Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and senior leader Sonia Gandhi.

In a post on X, Ramesh highlighted that the Congress party is committed to opposing what he described as an RSS-BJP attempt to undermine the electoral process in India. He conveyed that concerns around vote tampering, referred to as “Vote Chori,” have been raised by Rahul Gandhi over the past 18 months.

Ramesh emphasised that the recent developments stem from Gandhi’s dedication and the party’s ongoing efforts, stating that there is now a broad national demand to maintain the integrity of elections in India.

Key Demands Issued by Congress

During the meeting, the Congress party put forth several key demands aimed at addressing their concerns about electoral integrity. Among these demands is the immediate resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, which allegedly resulted in the removal of over 13 crores names from electoral rolls across 30 states and Union Territories.

Jairam Ramesh specifically outlined four major demands: the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, the suspension of SIR, the restoration of the 13 crore names removed from the electoral rolls, and the resignations of both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, whom he accused of orchestrating electoral malpractices.

Ramesh stated, “The Congress is not merely an opposition party; it is a party committed to resistance. We will ensure that our struggle reaches its legitimate conclusion.” This assertion highlights the Congress party’s resolve to tackle the issues at hand directly.

Concerns Surrounding Special Intensive Revision

The issue surrounding the Special Intensive Revision process has intensified in light of recent reports, particularly one from The Indian Express. This investigation revealed that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections at least 14 times over a period of ten months regarding the procedures and decisions related to the SIR exercise.

In response to these allegations, the Election Commission has firmly denied that the objections indicate any form of institutional dissent. The Commission maintains that all decisions associated with the SIR were made with unanimous approval from its members, countering claims that there were internal disagreements.

The allegations related to the electoral process pose significant questions about the effectiveness and transparency of the electoral system in India. The Congress party is seeking to leverage these concerns to mobilise public sentiment against the current administration and ensure the restoration of voter rights.
