Israel Warns US Of Alleged Iranian Plot To Assassinate Donald Trump: Reports

The CSR Journal Magazine

Israel has shared fresh intelligence with the United States alleging that Iran recently developed a new plan to assassinate US President Donald Trump, according to multiple media reports.

The intelligence, which reportedly referred to a specific alleged assassination plot, was shared with US officials this week. However, American agencies had not independently verified the information or been tracking the purported plan before receiving the Israeli warning, according to CNN.

Israel Shares Intelligence On Specific Alleged Plot

The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel passed the intelligence concerning the alleged assassination plan to US officials this week.

CNN, citing two sources familiar with the matter, also reported that the warning referred to a specific alleged Iranian plot targeting Trump.

The exact details of the purported plan remain unclear.

According to CNN, US intelligence agencies had not independently verified the Israeli intelligence or been monitoring the specific alleged plot before the warning was delivered.

Some US officials believe the intelligence could also be part of a broader Israeli effort to influence Trump’s decision on whether to intensify American military action against Iran, CNN reported.

One source told the broadcaster that US intelligence had been monitoring a steady flow of threats against Trump in recent weeks but described the Israeli warning as new because it concerned a specific alleged plan.

Trump Says He Is On Iran’s Assassination Lists

The White House declined to directly comment on the reported intelligence and referred The Wall Street Journal and CNN to remarks made by Trump during a press briefing in Ankara, Turkey, on Wednesday.

“They want to take out the US leader, me,” Trump said. “I’m on every list. I saw this morning, I’m on every single one of their lists. And so far, I guess I’ve been a little bit lucky, but that maybe doesn’t last very long.”

Trump later said he had recently learned of a new list that ranked him as Iran’s top assassination target.

However, it remains unclear whether the US president was referring to the specific intelligence reportedly shared by Israel.

US, Iran Continue Nuclear Talks Amid Renewed Hostilities

The reports emerged as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran continued despite renewed military hostilities.

CNN reported that US and Iranian officials were still working towards reaching a nuclear agreement by mid-August.

Multiple officials told the broadcaster that US forces had made contingency preparations for possible military strikes while negotiations continued.

Diplomacy, however, remained the preferred course for Washington, according to the report.

Trump, Netanyahu Differ Over Direction Of Iran Conflict

The reported intelligence warning also comes amid growing differences between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over the future direction of the conflict with Iran.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Netanyahu has pushed for continued military operations against Iran to achieve additional war objectives.

Trump, however, has sought a way to exit the conflict because of concerns about its wider economic consequences, the report said.

Trump and Netanyahu spoke by telephone on Thursday. Netanyahu’s office said the two leaders discussed recent US activity in the Gulf and agreed to continue coordination between their countries.

Iran Has Vowed Revenge For Qassem Soleimani Killing

US officials have long warned that Iran could seek revenge against Trump over the 2020 drone strike that killed Qassem Soleimani, the former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, during Trump’s first term.

Iran has repeatedly vowed retaliation for Soleimani’s killing.

During funeral proceedings for Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei over the weekend, mourners chanted slogans calling for Trump’s death.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a banner reading “We Will Kill Trump” was also displayed during the ceremony.
