The Investing Rhythm That Could Suit Your Salary Better Than Monthly SIPs

The CSR Journal Magazine

When it comes to investment plans, most of the salaried investors stick to monthly Systematic Investment Plans (SIP). They do so without questioning if it’s actually the right investment rhythm for their cash flow. While monthly SIPs are great in theory, they often fall short in practice due to a mismatch between salary credits and deduction dates.

Before settling on a fixed monthly cadence, consider trying a weekly SIP calculator first to determine if a different investing approach could work better for you.

Why Monthly SIPs Don’t Always Work as Smoothly as Expected

In India, SIPs are the most popular investment plan, and there’s a reason behind this. They can be automatic, simple, and easy to set up. But simplicity doesn’t always mean suitability.

The biggest point of friction is time. If your salary arrives on the 5th but your SIP deducts on the 3rd,  you’re relying on the existing account balance to fund the investment. That buffer often doesn’t exist for investors who deploy their salary immediately for expenses. This leads to a failed transaction, missed instalment and disrupted investment plan.

Psychological aspects also come into play. A large monthly outflow can feel daunting if it leaves your account in a single transaction, even if the total amount is the same. During tighter months, this sense often causes investors to cut down on their SIPs or even stop their SIPs altogether.

What a Weekly SIP Actually Does Differently

With a weekly SIP, you spread your investment over four smaller deductions a month as opposed to one large one. The amount of money invested doesn’t change, but the experience of investing certainly does.

Instead of one large deduction, smaller, more frequent transactions are much less noticeable in your daily cash flow. They also present some form of intra-month rupee cost averaging. You buy at slightly different Net Asset Values (NAVs) across the month rather than locking into a single price point each time. Over longer periods, this can smooth out entry costs modestly.

Weekly intervals also provide excellent flexibility for freelancers or those with irregular income streams, allowing deductions to align closer to when payments are actually received. You don’t have to put all of your investments in one monthly place, instead you can get deductions closer to when the money is actually received.

How to Decide What Works for You?

The truth is, neither monthly nor weekly SIPs are inherently superior. The selection will be based on the income trend, expense cycle, and nature of a particular investor.

Run the Numbers First

First, evaluate and contrast the expected results at various contribution frequencies. With a weekly SIP calculator, you can do just that and get a better idea of what you’re committing to before you do so. It could be a small difference in the final corpus, but a big difference in consistency and follow-through.

Choose a Platform That Offers Flexibility

When choosing where to invest, look for a modern investment app that allows you to select SIP frequencies beyond just monthly. Some platforms provide only monthly and fortnightly choices, so it’s important to check this prior to signing up. The ability to easily adjust your SIP plan with varying income patterns is also crucial for a good investment application.

Let Your Salary Cycle Lead the Way

It’s not that the most commonly used SIP frequency is the best, but the one that works with your real-life income, spending, and saving. For some, monthly SIPs work well, but there are other options to consider. Challenge the norm, question the options, and develop an investing routine that you can follow regularly.
