“Is It Because Of My Expression?”: Alia Bhatt Clarifies BAFTA ‘Gone Girl’ Backlash

The CSR Journal Magazine

Bollywood actor Alia Bhatt has addressed the online criticism that followed a brief interview clip from the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) red carpet, in which she was asked to name a film with a memorable plot twist. The moment, captured shortly after she presented the award for Best Film Not in the English Language, went viral as social media users focused on her brief hesitation before naming Gone Girl. Some commenters scrutinised her expressions and body language during the exchange, leading to widespread debate online.

Speaking to fashion commentator Diet Sabya about the reaction, Alia questioned the extent of the discussion, asking: “Why is it being talked about so much? Is it because of my expression?” She explained that her pause had been a result of trying to recall specific details from the film, which she hadn’t watched since its release about a decade ago, rather than uncertainty or unfamiliarity with the movie itself.

Clarifying Her Thought Process

Alia elaborated that when the interviewer mentioned “that monologue,” she was mentally tracing back her memories of the film and nodding in recognition as pieces came back to her. She said she still believes Gone Girl has one of the best twists, but admitted she hadn’t revisited it in years.

The actor also reflected on her public persona, describing herself as “more sweet than cool” and playfully calling herself “uncool,” as her sister reportedly jokes. Through this explanation, she aimed to dispel interpretations that her reaction reflected disinterest, rudeness or lack of knowledge.

Professional Projects Ahead

Beyond the online chatter, Alia Bhatt’s professional calendar remains busy. She is set to lead Alpha, a female-centric spy thriller from the YRF Spy Universe directed by Shiv Rawail and co-starring Bobby Deol and Sharvari Wagh, which is expected next year. She is also collaborating with acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali on the upcoming project Love and War, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.

Her appearance at BAFTA earlier in the week also generated positive buzz for her presence on the international stage and her presentation style, including a memorable bilingual greeting during her award presentation.

After social media buzz over her BAFTA interview reaction and Gone Girl moment, Alia Bhatt explains her response and reflects on the online discussion, while highlighting upcoming films Alpha and Love and War.
