Iraq Secures Historic Qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026 with 2-1 Win Over Bolivia

The CSR Journal Magazine

Iraq has achieved a significant milestone by qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 following a 2-1 victory against Bolivia in an intercontinental playoff match. This game took place at Estadio BBVA on April 1, marking Iraq’s return to the World Cup after almost 40 years. The Asian nation secured the last available spot in the newly expanded 48-team tournament. Their last participation in the World Cup was in 1986, making this qualification particularly special for the “Lions of Mesopotamia.”

The match began with Iraq taking control early in the first half. Forward Ali Al-Hamadi opened the scoring with a precise header resulting from a set-piece. Bolivia, however, fought back, with Moises Paniagua finding the equalizer just before halftime, giving both teams a glimmer of hope.

After the break, Iraq quickly regained the upper hand. Substitute Marko Farji made an immediate impact by assisting Aymen Hussein, who scored in the 53rd minute to restore Iraq’s lead. From that point on, Iraq’s defense maintained discipline and consistently thwarted Bolivia’s attempts to equalize. Despite Bolivia’s efforts with long-range shots and aerial crosses, they were unable to penetrate Iraq’s solid backline.

Upcoming Matches in the World Cup

This victory not only signifies a historic achievement for Iraqi football but also sets the stage for their upcoming challenges in Group I of the World Cup. Iraq will face formidable opponents, including France, Norway, and Senegal. Their campaign will kick off against Norway on June 16, followed by matches against France on June 22 and Senegal on June 26.

Iraq’s qualification journey reflects the team’s resilience and determination, especially under the leadership of head coach Graham Arnold. The squad has navigated various challenges throughout the qualifying process, culminating in this remarkable achievement.

Bolivia’s Playoff Journey

For Bolivia, the quest to return to the World Cup ended in disappointment. They reached the playoff stage by defeating Suriname but could not overcome Iraq in this crucial match. As a result, Bolivia’s last World Cup appearance dates back several years, solidifying the gap in their journey to reclaim a spot on football’s biggest stage.

This playoff clash showcased the competitive nature of international football and underscored the significance of qualification for both teams, with Iraq celebrating a return to the World Cup and Bolivia reflecting on the challenges ahead.
