Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Praises India’s Neutral Stance

The CSR Journal Magazine

On May 13, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Kazem Gharibabadi expressed Tehran’s openness to any initiatives from India aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia. He highlighted India’s traditionally impartial approach while addressing reporters in New Delhi. Gharibabadi commended India for its consistent support for peace in the region.

During the briefing, the Deputy Foreign Minister remarked that both Iran and India share deep cultural ties. Describing the two nations as “two nations with one culture,” he noted the significance of fostering people-to-people connections. Gharibabadi emphasised the importance both countries place on their shared heritage.

Gharibabadi reiterated that any diplomatic efforts from India to alleviate tensions would be positively received. His comments come ahead of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, indicating Iran’s desire for constructive relations.

Chabahar Port Project Remains a Priority

In discussing the Chabahar Port project, Gharibabadi underscored its importance for Iran and acknowledged India’s keen interest in further cooperation. He stated that the future of the project largely depends on India’s initiative. The Chabahar Port is strategically significant for both nations, facilitating trade and transport in the region.

Moreover, Gharibabadi referred to India’s active role within the BRICS framework, expressing hopes for a joint declaration following the upcoming meeting. He indicated that there are ongoing discussions regarding the role of certain Arab nations within BRICS that may seek to address conditions pertaining to Iran.

Concerning the Strait of Hormuz, Gharibabadi stated that Iran is willing to ensure open maritime access if the United States ends its sanctions, releases Iranian assets, and ceases military actions. He added that negotiations regarding maritime service fees for vessels passing through the Strait are ongoing with Oman. However, details on this mechanism have yet to be finalised.

Iran and India Strengthen Maritime Cooperation

Gharibabadi highlighted the strong maritime cooperation between Iran and India, noting that around 11 Indian vessels have successfully traversed the Strait of Hormuz, an achievement that reflects the growing partnership. He stated that Iran is working closely with India to facilitate the movement of additional vessels amidst ongoing tensions in the Gulf.

The significance of these developments is critical as India relies heavily on energy imports that transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a pivotal route in the global oil supply chain. This collaboration underscores both nations’ commitment to enhancing maritime security and trade.

Furthermore, on the issue of diplomatic mediation, Gharibabadi remarked that Pakistan’s recent role in facilitating communication between Iran and the United States is part of a broader trend, noting previous involvement from countries like Egypt, Qatar, and Oman. He emphasised that mediators serve only as facilitators in discussions, not as negotiators themselves.

Regarding the nuclear issue, Gharibabadi reaffirmed Iran’s readiness for dialogue on uranium production and enrichment but accused the United States and Israel of abandoning diplomacy despite prior progress. He described the US demands for Iran to halt its enrichment activities as excessive and unacceptable.

Finally, Gharibabadi warned that Iran would respond vigorously if hostilities resumed, asserting the country’s capability to defend itself despite perceived limitations in military equipment. He confirmed that Iran remains committed to its defence, should a ceasefire fail.
