Iran has issued a warning regarding the potential impact of new US sanctions on regional stability, asserting that they will not lead to peace in the Middle East. Esmail Baghaei, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, stated that Tehran will respond assertively to any expansion of US sanctions and may take measures against nations that allegedly collaborate with the United States. He emphasised that further escalation could have serious consequences, declaring, “Our hands are not tied.”

This warning comes in the context of ongoing stagnation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, where Iranian actions have disrupted shipping routes critical for global oil trade. Iran has persistently called for the reopening of the strait and the end of the US naval blockade, alongside the withdrawal of US forces from the region. Additionally, Iran has engaged in discussions with Oman about jointly managing the waterway irrespective of the resolutions made with the United States.

As these tensions unfold, Iran’s economy is facing strain from existing sanctions. The country has historically adapted to such pressures by establishing new trade partnerships and bolstering domestic industries. However, the imminent announcement of stricter sanctions has catalysed a significant drop in the value of Iran’s currency, leading to concerns about rising prices for essential goods.

Recent Developments in Syria-Israel Relations

In a parallel development, Syrian officials and an Israeli delegation convened in Jordan for talks aimed at reducing tensions following an Israeli air strike at the Abu Duhur air base in Idlib province. The discussions, reportedly mediated by the United States, centred on restarting negotiations regarding a prospective security agreement between Syria and Israel.

The Israeli strike was described as a measure to prevent Turkiye from establishing a presence at the air base amid ongoing civil conflict within Syria. Syrian officials asserted their right to develop their military and forge alliances, while reiterating claims over the Golan Heights as part of Syrian territory. They also demanded that Israeli forces withdraw from a buffer zone in southern Syria, occupied since December 2024.

As of Monday, Israeli officials had not provided public comments regarding the discussions in Jordan. These diplomatic efforts occur against the backdrop of heightened military activity and shifting alliances in the region.

Concerns Over Violence in the West Bank

In the West Bank, anxiety persists among the local population due to ongoing violence from Israeli settlers. Loui Ridi, a Palestinian American visiting from Ohio, expressed fears for his safety after Israeli settlers surrounded his family’s home in the village of Qusra. Ridi, who is there to assist his relatives in defending their property, reported that movement is severely restricted in the area due to the Israeli military declaring it a closed zone.

The siege, which began more than two weeks ago, has resulted in intensified scrutiny of the family’s movements, as they can only travel with permission from the military. The situation has left residents vulnerable, as settlers continue to return to the surrounding hills, complicating daily activities such as sourcing food and water.

Despite ongoing tensions, there have been no reported arrests in connection with the siege. The incidents have drawn condemnation from various human rights organisations and foreign officials. The US Ambassador to Israel has also described the situation as a form of terrorism, highlighting the deepening crisis in the region.
