Iran Offers to Negotiate to End Conflict, Criticizes US Actions

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mohammad Fathali, Iran’s Ambassador to India, stated on Saturday that Tehran is open to negotiations aimed at resolving the current conflict. Fathali emphasized that while the United States initiated the war, it cannot bring it to a close without engaging in dialogue with Iran. His comments were made during the India Today Conclave 2026. He reiterated that Iran has consistently communicated its willingness for negotiations, preferring this approach over continued hostilities.

According to Fathali, Iran’s decision to re-enter negotiations was driven by a desire to prevent the opposing side from utilizing any potential pretexts for further conflict. This statement followed remarks from US President Donald Trump, who characterized Iran as “totally defeated” and indicated his refusal to accept any deals proposed by the Iranian government.

Escalating Tensions with US Military Bases in the Region

The Iranian envoy also mentioned that attacks on US military installations in Gulf nations are likely to persist, as regional violence continues into its third week. Fathali highlighted that Iran has respect for its neighboring countries but maintains that it is retaliating against aggressive actions originating from American bases located within those nations. He expressed a strong stance regarding the targeting of US facilities, particularly in light of past incidents that have harmed Iranian citizens.

Notably, on February 28, a missile strike hit a girls’ school in Iran, resulting in the deaths of approximately 170 students. This attack has been linked to escalating tensions in the region, prompting an initial denial of involvement from the US military before subsequently announcing an investigation into the bombing.

Repercussions of Military Actions on Both Sides

The recent conflict saw significant casualties among Iranian leadership, including the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during initial Israeli-US strikes on February 28. In response, Iran widened the scope of hostilities by targeting US bases across the Gulf region. Concurrently, Israeli forces engaged Hezbollah positions in Lebanon as part of a strategy to mitigate the perceived threat posed by the Iran-backed group.

Fathali’s remarks encapsulate the prevailing sentiment in Tehran regarding its readiness for dialogue while also signaling a commitment to respond to perceived threats. The situation underlines the complexities and multifaceted dimensions of the ongoing conflict, exhibiting both diplomatic overtures and military responses from Iran amidst international scrutiny.
