Iran Demands Concrete US Guarantees Before Any Deal, Citing Deep Mistrust in Ongoing Talks

The CSR Journal Magazine

The ongoing peace negotiations between Iran and the United States have encountered significant challenges, as Iran insists it will not endorse any agreement without concrete guarantees. Speaking at a virtual session of parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, the speaker and chief negotiator for Iran, emphasised the need for tangible outcomes rather than empty promises. His comments highlight the deep mistrust that currently characterises the diplomatic relationship between the two nations.

Qalibaf’s remarks signal a clear message that Iran seeks to ensure the protection of its national interests prior to making any commitments. Quoted by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB), he stated, “There is no trust in the enemy’s words and promises.” This assertion underscores Iran’s focus on securing its rights through verifiable commitments from the United States.

The commentary from Iranian officials follows reports indicating that the Trump administration has sent Tehran a revised framework for negotiations that includes stricter stipulations. While details remain undisclosed, it is evident that the US expects stronger assurances from Iran before any agreement can come to fruition.

Key Issues in US-Iran Relations

Despite the continuation of diplomatic efforts, fundamental disagreements persist between Iran and the United States, complicating the prospect of reaching a consensus. Reports from multiple media outlets suggest that the revised framework proposed by the Trump administration contains tougher conditions that could hinder the progress of negotiations aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

One of the pivotal topics continues to revolve around the nuclear capabilities of Iran. President Trump has made it clear that preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons is of utmost importance. During a recent interview, Trump expressed his belief that Iran had agreed to forgo any nuclear ambitions. However, Iranian officials have disputed these claims, asserting that various critical issues remain unaddressed in discussions.

Additionally, Iranian media have indicated that Tehran is seeking access to approximately $12 billion in previously frozen assets, which it views as essential before engaging in serious discussions about its nuclear programme. The insistence on these funds reflects the financial pressures faced by Iran in the context of ongoing economic sanctions.

Strait of Hormuz: A Critical Contention

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime passage for global energy supplies, remains a contentious point in negotiations. Tensions have escalated since Iran restricted access to the strait amid the ongoing conflict, causing significant disruptions in energy markets. Recent statements from Trump suggest that any future agreement would involve Iran imposing “no tolls” on vessels navigating the strait; however, Iranian representatives have rapidly countered these assertions.

According to Fars news agency, no such provision exists in the current negotiations. Iranian lawmaker Alireza Salimi disclosed that parliament plans to evaluate proposals aimed at strengthening Iran’s control over the important waterway. This clash of perspectives further complicates the already complex negotiations between the two nations.

Amid these diplomatic challenges, the violence stemming from the conflict has persisted, despite a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan that took effect earlier in April. The conflict initially escalated following strikes by US and Israeli forces against Iranian targets in February, prompting retaliatory attacks from Tehran against US allies in the Gulf. Recent developments, including US military action against Iranian port facilities, have reignited tensions, illustrating the fragile state of stability in the region.
