The unemployment rate in India for individuals aged 15 years and older has decreased slightly to 5% in August from 5.1% in July, according to the latest data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) released by the government on Tuesday. This change reflects a modest improvement in the employment landscape, alongside an uptick in labour force participation. The figures indicate a continued recovery in employment indicators, particularly in rural sectors.

Rural Unemployment Trends

The overall decline in the unemployment rate can be attributed predominantly to rural areas. In August, the rural unemployment rate dropped to 4.1% compared to 4.5% in July. This figure marks the lowest level of rural unemployment observed since January 2026. However, urban unemployment saw a slight increase, rising to 6.8% in August from 6.7% the previous month.

When compared year-on-year, the overall unemployment rate has remained largely stable since August of last year. The rural unemployment rate has seen a reduction from 4.3% recorded in August 2025 to the current 4.1%. Additionally, male unemployment rates within rural sectors have shown improvement, declining to 4.3% from 4.6% in July, while urban male unemployment increased marginally to 6.1%.

For women, the overall unemployment rate fell to 5.1% in August, down from 5.9% in June. Rural female unemployment benefitted from this trend, decreasing to 3.9% from 4.3% in July. These figures indicate a positive trajectory in employment for women across both rural and urban settings.

Labour Force Participation Rate Increases

The Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) has risen, illustrating an increase in the number of individuals either employed or seeking employment. In August, the LFPR reached 55.6%, up from 55.4% in July. Rural LFPR experienced growth, rising to 58.2% from 58%, whereas the urban LFPR remained static at 50.4%. This upward trend in the LFPR suggests more individuals are engaging with the workforce.

Women’s participation in the workforce has also seen improvements. The overall female LFPR increased to 34.8% in August from 34.4% in July. In rural areas, female LFPR rose to 39.4% compared to 38.8% the previous month, while the urban rate was stable at 25.4%. This data reflects the ongoing efforts to enhance female participation in economic activities.

These developments in LFPR show a potential revitalisation of employment opportunities, particularly for women and in rural regions, contributing positively to the overall economic landscape.

Worker Population Ratio Shows Improvement

In addition to changes in unemployment and labour force participation, the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) indicates an increase in employment within the population. The WPR rose to 52.8% in August from 52.5% in July. The rural WPR also witnessed an upturn, climbing to 55.8% from 55.4%. By contrast, the urban WPR remained unchanged at 47%.

The estimates provided for August are based on comprehensive data collected from a total of 3,70,160 individuals across India, encompassing 2,11,353 participants from rural regions and 1,58,807 from urban areas. This robust data collection underpins the government’s efforts to monitor employment trends effectively.

Overall, these findings highlight a gradual yet significant positive change in India’s employment scenario, with improvements in both rural and urban areas reflecting in various employment indicators.
