Indian Women Cricketers Receive Rs 51 Crore, Rewards over World Cup Win

The CSR Journal Magazine

India recently made history by winning their first-ever ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. This landmark victory not only united the nation in joy but also prompted a wave of recognition for the players across India. From cash prizes to government jobs and land allocations, several state governments stepped forward to honour the champions for their hard work and dedication. Meanwhile, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced exciting plans to expand the Women’s World Cup, signalling a bright future for the sport in India and globally.

An Emotional Triumph for Indian Women Cricketers

India’s journey to the Women’s World Cup title was packed with determination and resilience. The final, held at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, saw India beat South Africa by 52 runs to secure their maiden World Cup win. Key contributors included Shafali Verma’s powerful 87 runs, Deepti Sharma’s all-around brilliance with 58 runs and five crucial wickets, and N. Shree Charani’s breakthrough bowling performance. The victory erased the pain of past final losses in 2005 and 2017, making this win even sweeter for the team and the millions of fans watching across the country.

Spinner N. Shree Charani, a young talent from Andhra Pradesh, was celebrated widely in her home state. She received a Rs 2.5 crore cash prize, a Group-I government job, and a residential plot, honouring her role in the triumph. Charani was warmly welcomed at Vijayawada airport by state ministers and the Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, a testament to the massive pride she brought to the state.

Rewards and Recognition Flowing In

The celebrations and rewards were not limited to Andhra Pradesh. Maharashtra honoured their stars with special cash gifts; Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Radha Yadav each received Rs 2.25 crore. Additionally, their coach Amol Muzumdar was rewarded with Rs 22.5 lakh for his guidance. In Madhya Pradesh, pacer Kranti Gaud was awarded Rs 1 crore, with the state also considering reinstating her father in government service as a mark of support.

On a national level, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a whopping Rs 51 crore cash reward for the entire team, including players, coaches, and support personnel. This bounty reflected the magnitude of the achievement and the importance placed on women’s cricket in India. The ICC also set a new record by awarding approximately Rs 40 crore (USD 4.48 million) in prize money, the highest for any Women’s World Cup so far.

One poignant moment was the recognisation of opener Pratika Rawal, who missed the final matches due to an ankle injury. Through the intervention of ICC Chairman Jay Shah, Rawal was given her winner’s medal, underscoring the collective spirit and unity in the team’s success.

Expansion of the Women’s World Cup

The tournament’s triumphant reception has prompted the ICC to take bold steps to further strengthen women’s cricket globally. The governing body has announced that the upcoming 2029 Women’s ODI World Cup will feature 10 teams, up from eight. This expansion will give more women cricketers the chance to compete on the world stage, enhancing the sport’s popularity and competitiveness.

During this record-breaking World Cup, audiences showed immense enthusiasm, with nearly 300,000 fans attending matches across venues—a new record for any women’s cricket tournament. The final attracted an astonishing 185 million viewers on JioHotstar alone, matching viewership numbers for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final and exceeding daily reach averages for the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The ICC has also reinforced its commitment to women’s cricket by appointing new members to its Women’s Cricket Committee, including former India captain Mithali Raj and top coaches from around the world. This highlights the growing respect and focus on developing the women’s game and nurturing future champions.

This historic triumph and subsequent honours have not only uplifted the players but have also inspired millions across India. It marks a new era where women’s cricket enjoys unprecedented attention, investment, and passion from the country. The coming years promise more growth, opportunity, and success as India and the world embrace the power of women in the sport.
