Fanny Utagushimaninde Makes History with T20I Century on Debut

The CSR Journal Magazine

Rwandan cricketer Fanny Utagushimaninde has etched her name in the record books by becoming the youngest player to score a century in T20 International cricket. This landmark achievement occurred during the Nigeria Invitational Women’s T20I Tournament, where she faced Ghana at Tafawa Balewa Square Cricket Oval in Lagos. At the youthful age of 15 years and 223 days, Utagushimaninde surpassed the previous record held by Gustav McKeon of France, who made his century at 18 years and 280 days against Switzerland in 2022. Utagushimaninde’s innings comprised 111 runs off 65 deliveries, highlighted by an impressive total of 17 fours.

Record for Highest Score on T20I Debut

In addition to her record as the youngest centurion, Utagushimaninde became the first player in Women’s T20I history to score a century on her debut. She surpassed the earlier record held by Karen Rolton, who scored 96 not out against England in 2005 at Taunton for the highest debut score in Women’s T20I cricket. The achievement not only demonstrates her talent but also places her alongside a group of male cricketers from various countries who had previously scored centuries on debut; however, none of them were from full-member nations.

Rwanda Dominates Ghana with Impressive Victory

Following Utagushimaninde’s remarkable performance, the Rwandan women’s cricket team achieved a commanding 122-run victory over the Ghanaian team. Batting first, Rwanda set a formidable target by accumulating 210 runs for the loss of three wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Utagushimaninde’s standout century, alongside contributions from Merveille Uwase (32 runs off 18 balls), and support from Gisele Ishimwe (14 runs) and Clarisse Uwase (15 runs), propelled Rwanda to a decisive score. Additionally, the team benefited from 25 extras, including wides, which aided their scoring.

Ghana Struggles in Chase

In response, Ghana faced significant challenges in their batting innings and ultimately finished with 88 runs after 20 overs. The team encountered difficulties in forming effective partnerships, leading to their struggle against the Rwandan bowlers. Notable bowling performances came from Belise Murekatete, who took three wickets for 20 runs, alongside key contributions from Marie Bimenyimana, Henriette Ishimwe, and Merveille Uwase, who each claimed important wickets. Kate Awuah emerged as the top scorer for Ghana with 31 runs from 56 deliveries, but her efforts were insufficient to alter the match’s outcome.

Acknowledgment of Achievement

For her extraordinary performance, Fanny Utagushimaninde was named the Player of the Match. Her historic century and the overall all-around display by the Rwandan team highlighted their dominance in this encounter, setting high standards for the remaining teams in the tournament. The victory not only marks a significant milestone in Utagushimaninde’s budding career but also elevates the profile of Rwandan women’s cricket on the international stage.
