Indian Tourists Among Five Killed in Tragic Bus Accident Near Buffalo

The CSR Journal Magazine

A devastating accident occurred on Friday when a tour bus carrying 54 passengers overturned on Interstate 90 close to Pembroke, around 40 kilometers east of Buffalo, New York. The group was heading back to New York City after a day-long visit to Niagara Falls when the bus veered off the road and rolled into a ditch.

Authorities reported that the majority of the passengers were of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino descent. Several survivors were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. New York State Police indicated that the crash likely resulted from driver distraction, causing the vehicle to lose control and over-correct.

At a briefing at the scene, Major Andre Ray explained, “It’s believed the operator became distracted, lost control, over corrected and ended up… over there.” He further clarified that investigations have ruled out mechanical failure, intoxication, or impairment as causes: “Mechanical error was ruled out as well as impairment or intoxication.”

Bus Operator Identified; Many Passengers Unbelted

The bus was operated by M&Y Tour Inc., based in Staten Island, New York. Police also noted that many passengers were not wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. Although passengers ranged from 1 to 74 years old, officials confirmed that no children were among the fatalities, amending earlier reports.

The crash took place around 12:30 pm on the eastbound side of the highway. Reports suggest the bus crossed into the median before finally resting in a roadside ditch. A police spokesperson said, “The driver is alive and well we’re working with him. We believe we have a good idea of what happened, why the bus lost control. We just want to make sure that all the details are thoroughly vetted.”

The force of the crash caused some passengers to be ejected from the bus, while others were trapped inside until emergency teams arrived. Mercy Flight, a nonprofit air ambulance service, deployed eight helicopters to assist in transporting critically injured victims. Margaret Ferrentino, Mercy Flight’s president, confirmed additional support from other agencies was involved in the airlift.

Two Patients Undergo Surgery After Bus Crash

Dr. Jeffrey Brewer, chief surgeon at Erie County Medical Center, shared that two patients required surgical intervention but are expected to recover. Injuries varied widely, including head trauma and broken bones. Over 40 passengers were treated or assessed at local hospitals, with translators brought in to aid communication with non-English speaking individuals.

Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement affirming that her administration is working closely with state police and local authorities to coordinate rescue and relief efforts. She said, “Our team is working with state police and local officials who are working to rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved.”

In response to the emergency, Connect Life, a regional blood and organ donation organisation, issued an urgent appeal for blood donors to support the victims.

US Senator Expresses Condolence

US Senator Chuck Schumer expressed his condolences: “I’m heartbroken for all those we’ve lost and all those injured and praying for their families. Thank you to our brave first responders on the scene.”

Major Ray, visibly moved, called the incident “an absolute tragedy,” adding, “Our thoughts, prayers, and hearts go out to those involved, their friends, and their families.”

This tragedy has sparked renewed conversations on the importance of safety measures and accountability for tour operators transporting international visitors, particularly to high-traffic destinations such as Niagara Falls, which attracts millions annually along the U.S.-Canada border.
