A 23-year-old Indian medical student, Dhvanit Rajdeep, who has been missing in Georgia since May 14, is now reportedly feared dead following the discovery of an unidentified body in the Mtkvari River. Residing in Odhav, Ahmedabad, Rajdeep was studying medicine at Caucasus University when he vanished, prompting local authorities to immediately initiate a search operation.

The search efforts involved multiple agencies as they scoured the area for any clues regarding Rajdeep’s whereabouts. The situation escalated after the police recovered a body from the river; however, the identification process has proven challenging due to the advanced decomposition of the remains, which were submerged for an extended period.

In an effort to confirm the identity of the deceased, Georgian police have collected DNA samples from Rajdeep’s elder brother, Mihir, who is currently in Georgia. This step became necessary to facilitate the identification process amid the difficulties posed by the body’s condition.

Family’s Concerns and Pleas for Assistance

The family of Dhvanit Rajdeep has expressed deep concern regarding the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. His father, Mayur, noted that despite the procedures initiated for identifying the body, Georgian authorities have yet to provide confirmation of his son’s status. The family is anxiously awaiting the results of the DNA tests and has called for a post-mortem examination to disclose the cause of death, should the body be verified as Rajdeep’s.

Previously, the family had raised alarming allegations of a dispute involving Anil, the landlord of the property where Rajdeep was staying. They claimed that Anil and other roommates mistreated him, stealing his belongings, including money, food, and clothing. The family has alleged that when Rajdeep intended to move out, Anil refused to return his deposit and, along with accomplices, allegedly extorted money from him while keeping him confined in a room.

Subsequent to these events, Mayur Rajdeep had arranged a flight ticket for his son to return to India. He reported that just as Dhvanit was on his way to the airport, en route to collect his passport and phone, the conversation abruptly ended, raising suspicions about his safety and whereabouts.

Official Investigation Underway

As investigations continue, local authorities are working diligently to unravel the circumstances behind Rajdeep’s disappearance and the alleged misconduct by his landlord and roommates. The eventual results of the DNA tests and the forthcoming autopsy, if deemed necessary, will shed light on this distressing situation.

In a show of support, Dhvanit’s family reached out to prominent officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, seeking intervention with Georgian authorities to facilitate the return of their son or provide clarity on the situation.

The tragic case has attracted considerable attention, shedding light on the challenges faced by international students abroad. The family hopes that their son’s case will be resolved promptly, providing them closure amid the ongoing uncertainty.
