Indian Army Conducts Successful Rescue of 235 Civilians Stranded in Kishtwar

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian Army successfully rescued 235 civilians stranded at Sinthan Top, located in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir, due to heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions. The humanitarian operation was conducted by troops from the White Knight Corps, who acted swiftly despite the challenging terrain and continuous snowfall.

Provision of Essential Supplies and Medical Aid

Rescue teams arrived at Sinthan Top on a Sunday and provided vital assistance to the trapped individuals, including hot meals, drinking water, and shelter. In addition to resettling the civilians, repair teams worked to restore mobility to the stranded vehicles, while passengers from vehicles deemed unrecoverable were safely evacuated. Medical personnel were also on-site to offer assistance and distribute necessary medications to those in need.

Collaboration Between Organizations Ensures Success

The operation concluded with all civilians and their vehicles being escorted to safety. The mission highlighted effective coordination among the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL). This collaboration reinforces the Indian Army’s ongoing commitment to protecting lives during extreme conditions.

Previous Rescue Efforts in Challenging Conditions

Earlier in January, the Indian Army had conducted a similar rescue operation, aiding 29 tourists stranded in North Sikkim due to severe weather. The rescue took place during the night of January 27-28, when heavy winds and snowfall blocked access to narrow mountain roads, leaving vehicles immobilized. Some vehicles were buried in snow, while others became inoperable due to freezing temperatures.

Medical and Logistical Assistance Provided to Stranded Tourists

The group included young children and elderly individuals, increasing the urgency of the situation. As temperatures dropped well below freezing, the thin mountain air led to dangerously low oxygen levels, resulting in several tourists suffering from acute mountain sickness and respiratory issues. Upon reaching the camp, the Army initiated comprehensive relief measures including medical assistance for those experiencing altitude-related problems.

Transforming the Camp into a Safe Haven

To counteract the biting cold, Army personnel provided extreme cold-weather clothing, sleeping bags, and heaters, along with a steady supply of hot meals and warm beverages. The camp was transformed into a refuge, offering warmth and comfort to all individuals present, from the youngest children to the elderly.

Successful Return to Safety

After spending the night under careful medical supervision, the tourists were served hot breakfast the following day. Once the weather conditions and road access improved, the Indian Army deployed specialized vehicles to transport the group safely back to their accommodations in Lachung.
