India Sets Up Inter-Ministerial Group Led by Rajnath Singh to Monitor Middle East Conflict Impact

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Indian government has announced the establishment of an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to monitor the ramifications of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This initiative aims to enhance New Delhi’s efforts in safeguarding energy supplies and ensuring economic stability amidst rising tensions. Senior ministers, including Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, are part of this group. The IMG will evaluate risks across various sectors and coordinate necessary responses as the geopolitical crisis continues to disrupt global trade and energy flows.

High-Level Review by Prime Minister Modi

This move follows a comprehensive review chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). The review focused on the implications of the conflict for several critical sectors, including agriculture, fertilizers, petroleum, power, shipping, and supply chains. Officials conducted an assessment of the broader macroeconomic outlook, examining both immediate and long-term strategies for mitigation. The government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted supplies of essential commodities, with discussions addressing fertilizer availability for the kharif season and strategies for diversifying import sources for chemicals and petrochemicals.

Tax Measures to Stabilize Fuel Prices

In conjunction with these developments, the Centre has implemented several tax measures aimed at managing fuel prices amid global market volatility. The excise duty on petrol has been reduced by Rs 3 per litre, while diesel duties have been brought down to zero. A windfall tax of Rs 21.5 per litre has been imposed on diesel exports. Furthermore, changes to Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) include a special additional excise duty of Rs 50 per litre, although exemptions will cap the effective duty at Rs 29.5 per litre in specific scenarios to alleviate pressure on the aviation sector. Officials indicated that these adjustments are part of efforts to maintain overall price stability in the market.

Reassurance from the Ministry of Petroleum

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has sought to allay public concerns regarding potential supply disruptions. In an official statement, the ministry confirmed that all retail outlets are operational nationwide and that there are sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel available at petrol pumps. Citizens have been encouraged to refrain from panic buying in light of the situation. The ongoing conflict has significantly strained the global energy landscape, particularly following Tehran’s enforcement of a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for approximately one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments. Prior to the escalation, India sourced about 12 to 15 percent of its crude oil imports from this corridor.

Government Monitoring and Ministerial Statements

Recently, Prime Minister Modi addressed Parliament, emphasizing that the ongoing crisis in West Asia has impacted the global economy, suggesting that recovery may be prolonged. He committed to vigilant monitoring of the situation and continuous efforts to mitigate its effects on India. In a parallel development, Petroleum Minister Puri rejected rumors regarding a possible nationwide lockdown, stating that such claims are unfounded and reaffirming the security of India’s energy position. Authorities have also confirmed that port operations remain normal, ensuring the safety of Indian ships and sailors operating in the Persian Gulf region. The government has pledged to stay vigilant as the conflict approaches a month of escalation.
