India Set For Friendly Against Cabo Verde Following Brazil Match

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is poised to potentially face Cabo Verde in an international friendly scheduled for October 6, just days after their match against Brazil on October 3. This encounter will provide head coach Khalid Jamil with a chance to evaluate his squad during the FIFA international window. The inclusion of Cabo Verde as an opponent aims to further challenge the team ahead of future competitions.

Brazil is set to play against India at Kolkata’s Salt Lake Stadium; however, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) recently withdrew the national team from the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup due to a clash in scheduling. This decision has generated significant debate within Indian football circles, particularly regarding the prioritisation of friendly matches over competitive ones.

Former India captain Bhaichung Bhutia has been among the critics, questioning the rationale behind skipping the tournament in favour of a high-profile friendly match. Despite the backlash, the AIFF has defended its decision, asserting that the Brazil match represents a unique opportunity for Indian football and has followed all necessary protocols for approval.

Inspection of Salt Lake Stadium

A delegation from the Brazilian Football Confederation visited Kolkata on Thursday to inspect Salt Lake Stadium in preparation for the Brazil match. This five-member team, led by Sergio Dimas de Oliveira, General Supervisor of Men’s National Teams, spent over two hours reviewing the stadium and hospitality arrangements before concluding their assessment around 5 pm.

West Bengal minister Indranil Khan reported that the delegation expressed satisfaction with the infrastructure and arrangements made for their upcoming visit. He noted a positive atmosphere during their discussions, suggesting that preparations for the match are progressing well.

The stadium inspection plays a crucial role in ensuring that all facilities meet the required standards for hosting an international event, contributing to the overall success of the match and the experience for visiting teams and fans alike.

Focus on Preparation and Development

Although the Cabo Verde match has yet to be officially confirmed, reports indicate that it is likely to occur in Kolkata or Kochi, utilising Salt Lake Stadium or the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, respectively. This potential fixture would allow Jamil to assess his squad’s capabilities against a competitive African team, which has previously performed well during its appearances on the world stage.

The proposed friendly against Cabo Verde would not only offer the Indian national team the opportunity to play against non-Asian opposition but would also enable players to gain valuable experience in preparation for future challenges. It is anticipated that the team will commence its preparations around September 21, coinciding with the start of the FIFA international window, and may hold a training camp in Kolkata.

The AIFF is also reportedly considering another friendly encounter prior to the match against Brazil, suggesting an especially active international window for India. Additionally, concerns from Bhutia have surfaced regarding the investment into these friendlies instead of grassroots initiatives for football development. Nonetheless, the federation maintains that engagements like the Brazil match can enhance morale and drive interest in Indian football.
