A private girls’ hostel situated in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, has become the subject of an investigation following allegations that its warden placed a mobile phone with the camera activated inside a washroom designated for female residents. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of September 8, 2026, when a new student, who had joined the hostel two days prior, discovered the phone in a tin shed while using the facility.

Upon discovering the mobile device, the student recorded a video of the phone and alerted other girls in the hostel to share what she had found. It was claimed that the camera was switched on and directed towards the toilet area. Allegedly, the phone contained recordings of five to six girls while they were in the washroom, which raised significant privacy concerns among the residents.

Several students managed to record the footage on their own devices, leading one of them to contact the police using Dial 112 to report the situation. Officers subsequently arrived at the hostel and confiscated the mobile phone, initiating a formal inquiry into the matter.

Warden’s Explanation and Justification

During police interrogation, the warden provided her rationale for placing the phone in the washroom, attributing it to the ongoing issue of some girls allegedly discarding sanitary pads outside the designated dustbin. She explained that the hostel had installed a trash bin in the bathroom for this purpose, yet certain residents neglected to use it, contributing to unsanitary conditions.

The warden claimed she switched the phone to recording mode around 10 pm, intending to identify those who were misusing the bathroom facilities. She further mentioned that the hostel had installed security cameras in various locations to enhance safety for the students. She denied having any malicious intent behind her actions.

This particular hostel accommodates 26 girls across 20 rooms, primarily comprising students attending local colleges and those preparing for competitive examinations. The warden has operated the establishment as a rented property for several years, and the incident has caused significant distress and unrest among the residents.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings Initiated

Following the discovery, the police took swift action, seizing the warden’s mobile phone and removing several videos recorded on it. Authorities also deleted files from the mobile phones of some students who had retained recordings of the incident. In the aftermath, the girls communicated the incident to their families, escalating the matter’s significance.

On September 9, 2026, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on complaints about the warden’s alleged privacy violations. Cantt Station House Officer Jitendra Singh stated that a team was dispatched to the hostel following the report received that evening. He noted that the police were actively investigating the situation and would take appropriate measures aligned with their findings.

Superintendent of Police City Nimish Patil indicated that the warden has been taken into custody for further questioning and stressed that law enforcement would proceed with necessary actions according to the results of the investigation. The ongoing case continues to highlight critical issues surrounding safety and privacy within educational environments.
