India Selects Bhuvneshwar Kumar for T20I Series Against New Zealand

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dinesh Karthik has applauded the Indian selectors for their bold decision to reinstate Bhuvneshwar Kumar into the national team after a four-year hiatus. Kumar last represented India in November 2022 and has now been named in the T20I squad for the upcoming series against New Zealand. His return follows two impressive seasons with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Indian Premier League (IPL), demonstrating his exceptional capabilities as one of the leading white-ball bowlers in India.

Karthik stated, “It’s taken four years to pick him back in that Indian team. Firstly, well done, selectors, to have the courage to pick someone.” In recent years, various pace options have been explored by the Indian team. However, Karthik expressed that Kumar’s unique skill set remains irreplaceable, highlighting his talent as a critical asset for the team.

According to Karthik, “Team India in the last year, they have tried all pacers. But if you actually look purely on skill, Bhuvi has been exceptional.” This includes Kumar’s ability to swing the new ball both ways, as well as his experience in death bowling, providing India with an adaptable option during different phases of a T20 match.

Factors Behind Bhuvneshwar’s Selection

Bhuvneshwar’s inclusion is particularly significant considering that his selection seemed unlikely under the previous regime led by Ajit Agarkar. Reports indicate that under Agarkar’s chairmanship, Bhuvneshwar was not recalled despite his performances, as the former India pacer preferred to focus on emerging talent rather than opt for an experienced player. Following Agarkar’s departure, Pragyan Ojha took over the role, making Kumar’s recall easier and aligning with India’s need for experienced bowlers in light of Jasprit Bumrah being rested for the T20I series.

With Bhuvneshwar’s proven ability to swing the ball effectively during the Powerplay, he adds further depth to the bowling line-up alongside Arshdeep Singh and other younger fast bowlers within the squad. His experience is expected to enhance the team dynamics as they prepare for the series.

Moreover, Bhuvneshwar’s recent performances in the IPL were crucial in renewing the selectors’ interest in him. Reports noted that he significantly contributed to RCB’s consecutive title-winning seasons, claiming 17 wickets in 2025 and 28 in 2026. His capability to execute movement with the new ball proved to be invaluable during the initial stages of matches, reinforcing his standing in the eyes of the selectors.

Future Prospects for Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Bhuvneshwar’s career appeared uncertain following a challenging international tenure, particularly during the T20 World Cup in 2022. Nonetheless, he dedicated himself to honing his craft away from the international stage. Karthik noted that Bhuvneshwar’s advancements made his recall undeniable, remarking that he should enjoy his return to international cricket based purely on his recent performances.

Karthik also reflected on discussions held during the IPL mega auction, which underscored Bhuvneshwar’s value. “When we were discussing for the mega auction, there was one name, Bhuvi, and you almost felt like you had to get him,” he stated. Bhuvneshwar’s resurgence is not only a testament to his past achievements but also a recognition of his ongoing potential to contribute to the team.

Particularly beneficial will be Bhuvneshwar’s guidance to a pace group that includes younger players such as Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav, as India prepares for future tournaments, including the 2028 T20 World Cup. Karthik, who was part of the Indian team during Bhuvneshwar’s last match, expressed his joy for the pacer’s opportunity, noting significant memories tied to Kumar’s cricketing journey. Bhuvneshwar is set to re-join the national squad for the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, with the first match scheduled for October 22.
