India Experiences Severe Weather Contrasts As Heatwave And Rainfall Persist

The CSR Journal Magazine

India is currently facing an unusual and intense period of weather contrasts, characterised by severe heatwave conditions in some regions while others endure heavy rainfall. This phenomenon has been described by meteorologists as part of a broader trend of atmospheric instability across the nation that is expected to continue in the forthcoming weeks.

The starkest differences in weather patterns are evident between Northeast India and the northern plains. States including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura are anticipated to encounter persistent heavy rainfall over the next 10 to 14 days, raising alarms regarding flooding and potential disruptions.

Devendra Tripathi, the founder of Mausam Tak, explained that a combination of moisture flowing in from the Bay of Bengal and passing Western Disturbances is causing continuous cloud formation and intense precipitation in these areas.

Heatwave Conditions In Central And Northern Regions

In contrast, many regions in northwest, central, and eastern India are grappling with significantly rising temperatures. The India Meteorological Department has issued warnings indicating that isolated pockets are likely to experience heatwave conditions over the coming days, with temperatures already reaching unusually high levels in states such as Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.

Additionally, a wave of pre-monsoon thunderstorms is expected to make its presence felt across various parts of the country prior to early May. States like Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Bihar may experience sudden storms, with risks of lightning, gusty winds, and localised flooding. Winds could reach speeds of up to 70 kmph in some areas, accompanied by possible hailstorms particularly in central India.

The concurrent occurrence of heavy rainfall and extreme heat raises concerns for many, with forecasts suggesting a dual threat that will challenge the region in the coming days.

Global Climate Shifts Impacting Indian Weather

Global climatic shifts are identified as a key contributor to the observed weather extremes in India. Rising sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean and a shift from La Niña to ENSO-neutral conditions might be setting the stage for an El Niño pattern around the upcoming monsoon season. Such a shift could exacerbate heatwave conditions, especially in northern regions of India.

El Niño and La Niña represent opposing phases within the Pacific Ocean climate cycle, with El Niño typically leading to hotter and drier weather in India, while La Niña generally enhances monsoon rainfall. Both phenomena are known to disrupt global weather patterns, which can result in heatwaves, storms, and varied climate conditions.

Furthermore, there has been a significant decrease in snow cover across Eurasia, including the Himalayan region, with an estimated 18 per cent reduction noted earlier this year. This reduction decreases the amount of sunlight reflected back into space, which contributes to warming trends both regionally and globally.

As a consequence of these shifting conditions, more than half of the world’s 50 hottest cities are presently located in India, highlighting the severity of the ongoing heatwave. Increased surface heating is also drawing moisture from the Arabian Sea and eastern regions, leading to erratic weather patterns and scattered rainfall across central and southern India.

Experts predict that the forthcoming 10 to 15 days will present substantial challenges, as the nation confronts both floods and heatwaves. While some areas in the north may enjoy brief relief from isolated rainfall later in the month, the overall weather is expected to remain unstable.
