IIT Roorkee Student drowns in the Ganga Canal in Haridwar

The CSR Journal Magazine

A tragic incident unfolded in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, when a student from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, identified as Ashish Shukla, drowned in the Ganga Canal on Wednesday evening. Local authorities confirmed the event occurred near the Municipal Corporation Bridge, where Shukla was with a group of friends at the time of the accident. The police reported that the strong water currents complicated rescue attempts.

Rescue Operations Initiated

Upon receiving information about the incident around 6 PM, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and local police promptly began search operations. The Superintendent of Police (SP) for Rural Roorkee, Shekhar Chandra Suyal, provided details about the situation, noting that attempts by Shukla’s friends to rescue him were unsuccessful. The water flow in the canal was noted to be particularly strong, hindering the search efforts.

Support from NDRF

As the search continued late into the night, support was requested from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to enhance the rescue operations. Despite these efforts, authorities reported that they had not yet located Shukla, and the search remained ongoing. The situation has drawn attention due to the dangerous conditions of the water flow, adding urgency to the rescue mission.

Related Incident in Greater Noida

In a separate incident, a 27-year-old man named Yuvraj Mehta lost his life when his vehicle plunged into a drain near the Sector-150 intersection in Greater Noida. This event occurred during the night between January 16 and 17. Family members of Mehta have accused the local administration of negligence, claiming that prompt intervention could have possibly prevented the tragedy as he struggled in the water for an extended period.

Arrests Made in Greater Noida Case

In connection with this incident, the Noida Police have arrested two individuals identified as Ravi Bansal and Sachin Karanwal. This action followed a complaint from Mehta’s family, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) under the relevant legal provisions. Local authorities are expected to continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding both tragic events.
