IIT Roorkee Hosts BIS Workshop on National Building Construction Standards 2026

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has hosted a workshop focused on the National Building Construction Standards (NBCS 2026). This event was held on August 17, 2026, at the Lecture Theatre, Water Resources Development and Management (WRDM) in Roorkee, in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). The session aimed to bring experts from various fields to discuss the updated standards and their implementation in promoting safe and quality construction practices.

Professor KK Pant, the Director of IIT Roorkee, served as the Chief Guest at the event, while Sanjay Pant, Deputy Director General (Standardisation) at BIS, presided over the inauguration. The gathering included faculty, students, and industry professionals, signalling the workshop’s broad interest across multiple disciplines. Addressing the assembly, officials highlighted the critical role of the new standards in establishing a framework for enhanced construction practices in India.

The workshop emphasised the integration of national standards with both academic knowledge and practical applications. This effort aims to foster a safer, more resilient built environment. The discussions aimed at improving stakeholder understanding and encouraging practical engagement with the standards among students and professionals alike, which is crucial for national infrastructure development.

Inaugural Addresses and Discussions

During the Welcome Address, Professor Deepak Khare, BIS Chair Professor at IIT Roorkee, underscored the significance of the workshop. He noted the importance of increasing awareness and understanding of Indian Standards, particularly among students. By facilitating activities like quizzes and seminars, IIT Roorkee aims to foster a culture of informed standards application among future professionals.

Sanjay Pant highlighted the necessity of adopting the updated NBCS 2026 nationwide, asserting that standards can only achieve their intended goals when effectively communicated and understood. His address reinforced the collaboration between BIS and IIT Roorkee, which is expected to enhance capacity and promote the successful implementation of the new standards.

He articulated the potential of IIT Roorkee as a multidisciplinary institution, capable of bridging academic research with the practical aspects of construction standards. The emphasis on educating students, faculty, and stakeholders about these updates is seen as essential for ongoing advancements in construction practices.

Technical Sessions and Student Engagement

The workshop featured a technical session conducted by experts from BIS and the professional community. Abhishek Pal, Scientist and Joint Director at BIS, provided an overview of NBCS 2026, outlining key revisions. Another presentation by Sandeep Goel focused on fire and life safety considerations within the updated standards, emphasising their importance in ensuring safer buildings.

Deepak Aggarwal, Head of the Standards Coordination & Monitoring Department at BIS, discussed the role of academic institutions in standardisation efforts, which foster effective implementation and research. Following these presentations, an interactive session allowed participants to engage directly with experts, facilitating dialogue and clarifications on practical applications of NBCS 2026.

The participation from various departments at IIT Roorkee, including Civil Engineering and Disaster Management, illustrated the multidisciplinary relevance of the new standards. The initiative highlights the importance of academia in evolving national priorities in infrastructure development.

Recognition and Future Initiatives

The workshop included a felicitation ceremony for Sanjay Pant, recognising his contributions to the National Building Code (NBC). With over 35 years of experience, he has played a critical role in the development and updating of various BIS Standards, which are essential for advancing India’s standardisation framework.

Moreover, a quiz on NBCS 2026 held on August 17, 2023, encouraged increased engagement with the standards among students. Prizes were awarded to top participants, further incentivising academic involvement. Winners from various departments were celebrated, highlighting the collaborative spirit of the event.

IIT Roorkee’s commitment to facilitating discussions on national standards reflects its ongoing dedication to infrastructure development and collaboration with BIS. This workshop served as an invaluable platform for knowledge exchange, contributing to a deeper understanding of construction practices among various stakeholders.
