ICE Reports Death of Another Mexican Detainee in U.S. Custody

The CSR Journal Magazine

Authorities have confirmed the death of Jose Guadalupe Ramos-Solano, a Mexican immigrant, while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Found unresponsive at a processing center in California, he was later pronounced dead at a hospital last week. This incident adds to the growing death toll of immigrants in U.S. immigration facilities, which has raised alarms amid ongoing enforcement actions.

Response from Mexican Authorities

In light of this incident, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her government’s intention to take actions aimed at protesting the death of another Mexican national on U.S. soil. During a press briefing, she indicated that measures would be implemented to address this humanitarian concern. President Sheinbaum’s comments reflect increasing apprehension over the welfare of Mexican citizens in U.S. immigration custody.

ICE has reported that Ramos-Solano had multiple health issues, including diabetes and hypertension, and received continuous medical care throughout his detention, which included daily medication. However, advocates for immigrant rights have raised serious concerns surrounding the adequacy and quality of medical care provided to detainees, particularly as the number of deaths continues to increase. In this year alone, about 14 detainees have died, including several other Mexican nationals.

Recent Deaths Intensify Scrutiny

Recent deaths also include that of Mohommad Nazeer Paktyawal, who passed away earlier this month after being transported to a Texas hospital for respiratory issues. Furthermore, 19-year-old Royer Perez-Jimenez was reported to have died from a presumed suicide at a detention center in Florida. Notably, some of these individuals have faced minor charges, yet ICE has often portrayed them as hardened criminals.

The rising fatality numbers have led to increased demands for independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding these deaths. For instance, Geraldo Lunas Campos died earlier this year, with initial reports attributing his death to “medical distress.” However, a subsequent medical examination determined his death to be a homicide, forcing a revision of the official narrative surrounding the incident.

Political Context of Immigration Policies

Since President Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January 2025, there has been a renewed focus on detaining and deporting undocumented immigrants. The crackdown has extended to include even those who are legally residing in the U.S., particularly targeting individuals engaged in activism related to conflicts such as the war in Gaza. In a separate incident in January, two fatalities occurred in Minnesota during a prolonged immigration enforcement operation, which prompted significant public outcry.
