Heat Wave Alert Issued for Parts of Northwest and Central India

The CSR Journal Magazine

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that a heat wave alert will remain in effect for various regions in northwest and central India over the next three days. This warning was issued on April 26, 2023, indicating that intense heat is likely to persist, particularly in isolated areas.

The IMD has projected that regions such as Jammu-Kashmir, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Bihar, and Gujarat will experience heat wave conditions. The department noted that the weather will mainly feature a clear sky, transitioning to partly cloudy conditions.

Preventive Measures and Recommendations

The IMD has advised the public to take precautions to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat. Recommendations include wearing lightweight, light-coloured, and loose-fitting cotton clothing. Individuals are also encouraged to cover their heads with a cloth, hat, or umbrella when outdoors.

As temperatures soar, Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta, has instructed officials to enforce the Heat Wave Action Plan 2026 rigorously. This action plan aims to mitigate the impacts of extreme heat conditions on vulnerable populations, particularly children and outdoor workers.

Recognising the alarming trend of sustained high temperatures, Gupta highlighted that the city has recorded temperatures exceeding 40°C for nearly 40 consecutive days over the last two to three years. This situation necessitates immediate action to safeguard public health.

Specific Measures for Vulnerable Groups

The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has announced targeted measures to protect school children from dehydration amid the ongoing heat wave. The government is considering administering Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) to children before they leave school during extreme heat conditions.

For construction workers who are often exposed to outdoor conditions, stringent measures will be enforced during peak heat hours. This is to ensure their safety and well-being while they work, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing health concerns associated with rising temperatures.

Overall, the IMD’s warnings and the government’s response underscore the increasing intensity of heat waves in the region, necessitating proactive measures to protect citizens from the adverse effects of extreme weather conditions.
