Delhi Experiences High Temperatures Amidst Monsoon Absence

The CSR Journal Magazine

Delhi is currently experiencing high temperatures and high humidity, causing discomfort among its residents. As of noon on July 16, the humidity level in the city reached 50 per cent, with similar conditions recorded the previous day. On July 15, the Safdarjung observatory noted a maximum temperature of 38.4°C, which is approximately 3.2°C above the seasonal average, and a minimum of 30.2°C. The absence of rainfall over the last 24 hours has exacerbated the oppressive weather, creating a longing for the returning monsoon.

Forecast for Upcoming Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has projected that high humidity and warm conditions will persist for an additional two days. On July 16 and 17, residents can expect continued sticky heat, though a slight drop in temperatures is anticipated thereafter, as weather systems evolve. The IMD indicated that temperatures may decrease by 3-5°C, allowing for more favourable conditions for rain.

While hot and humid weather will dominate the first half of July 17, there is a possibility of thunderstorms developing during the afternoon or evening, according to the latest reports from the IMD. The monsoon, which arrived in Delhi on July 2, has since exhibited reduced activity as the monsoon trough has shifted from the region and concentrated over eastern India, leading to prolonged dry spells despite the current season.

Potential Rainfall and Temperature Changes

Looking ahead, there are indications of possible rainfall starting from July 19. A western disturbance, a weather system that originates from the Mediterranean region and typically brings rain to Northwestern India, is expected to reach the area. Concurrently, an upper-air cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh may facilitate conditions favourable for cloud formation and light showers.

The IMD’s seven-day forecast suggests that Delhi may experience generally cloudy skies with isolated light rain on July 18 and 19, supported by winds ranging from 20-30 kmph and gusts potentially reaching up to 40 kmph. Notably, rain chances could improve significantly on July 20, when the IMD advises that light rain, thunderstorms, and lightning may occur in the morning, followed by additional rainfall at night.

As temperatures are expected to ease from the current levels of 38-40°C on July 17 to around 33-35°C by July 20, this shift is likely to offer much-needed relief from the prevailing oppressive weather conditions. Residents of Delhi are hopeful that the anticipated changes will restore some comfort as the monsoon season continues.
