Heat Wave Alert in Delhi Shoot Power Demand of the City to the Highest in 2025

The capital city saw its highest peak power demand of this summer season on Thursday, where the maximum temperature went as high as 43.9°C. According to the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC), the apex body responsible for integrated operation of the power system of the city, the peak power demand in the capital was around 8423 MW at 3 PM on Thursday, the highest ever load in the city in 2025.

Delhi has been reeling under intense heat, especially this week. According to the Indian Meteorological Department, a red alert was sounded for heatwave conditions on Wednesday. Preparation to tackle the increase in power load is undergoing.
“During the year, BSES have strengthened the network and undertaken several unique measures to ensure reliable power supply during the summer months. Apart from preventive maintenance, BSES has also done extensive predictive checks to identify hotspots or to predetermine potential faults and to take remedial measures. An online load monitoring system is also in place to tackle the power transformers, especially during summers,” said the spokesperson.

Heat Waves Increase Demand

To tackle the energy demands of the capital city, over 2100 MW of green power is also set to play an important role in ensuring reliable power supply during the summer season.

“This includes around 888 MW of solar power from SECI (Solar Energy Corporation of India), 500 MW of wind power and 40 MW of waste-to-energy. BSES’s efforts to ensure reliable power are also being helped by 160 MW plus rooftop solar panels installed on rooftops in South, West, East, and Central Delhi,” states the concerned official to the national media.
