Hansal Mehta Confirms Pralay with Ranveer Singh Is an Original Post-Apocalyptic Story

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hansal Mehta, the renowned filmmaker, has provided details regarding his forthcoming project, Pralay, which features actor Ranveer Singh. The film, which is anticipated to engage audiences, will depict a vast post-apocalyptic scenario. Mehta mentioned that this idea has been in development for an extended period.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Mehta traced the origins of the project back to filmmaker Jai Mehta, who had been independently developing the concept prior to Ranveer Singh joining the team. “Jai had dedicated significant time to this idea,” he noted, explaining that collaboration began when Singh expressed interest in the concept. “When Ranveer viewed his work, he reached out to him, leading Jai to present the idea. After Ranveer expressed enthusiasm, we decided to support Jai in realising the world he envisions for the film.”

Ambitious Scope and Vision

Mehta elaborated on the expansive and ambitious nature of Pralay, classifying it as a pioneering project for Indian cinema within its genre. He remarked, “It is a post-apocalyptic narrative that has not been explored before in India at this magnitude.” He highlighted that the developmental phase encompasses not merely writing but also formulating ideas, visualising them, and effectively presenting them to stakeholders like actors and studios. “We have committed resources to cultivate these concepts,” he conveyed.

In response to speculation about the film being based on existing literature, Mehta firmly stated that the narrative is entirely original. “It is not an adaptation,” he clarified, adding that the original story was crafted by Jai and Vishal Kapoor. Commenting on the challenges of adapting books such as Blindness, he mentioned, “The narrative is difficult to transition to film. I watched the 2008 film adaptation, and it did not meet expectations. Renowned authors like Saramago or Salman Rushdie should ideally be appreciated in their written form. Their narratives lose charm when transferred to the screen.”

Mehta emphasised that the film’s success hinges on the effective portrayal of its world. “The achievement of Jai’s film will rely on how convincingly we depict this immersive universe,” he stated. He explained that they are collaborating with top international talent to ensure the film’s authenticity, all while managing the budget efficiently compared to Hollywood standards.

Significance in Indian Cinema

As a result of its ambitious premise and commitment to effective storytelling, Pralay is poised to be a crucial addition to the evolving sphere of high-concept films in India. The filmmakers are focused on creating a unique cinematic experience that reflects the intricacies and emotional depth of its narrative.

Mehta’s dedication to maintaining originality while ensuring immersive viewing demonstrates his commitment to pushing the boundaries of Indian filmmaking. As the production moves forward, the excitement surrounding Pralay continues to grow, positioning it as a noteworthy entry in the landscape of contemporary Indian cinema.

The strategic approach taken by Mehta and his team may not only redefine genre conventions but could also pave the way for future projects that explore similar themes. The filmmakers’ resolve to innovate suggests a promising trajectory for high-concept narratives in India.
