Gujarat Ventures into Space Sector with ₹500 Crore Satellite Facility and Launchpad Plans

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gujarat is advancing into India’s burgeoning space industry with an initiative that includes the development of a satellite manufacturing plant and plans for a new launch site along its coastline. This endeavor, which is propelled by an investment estimated at ₹500 crore, aims to establish the state as a pivotal player in the expanding framework of the nation’s space sector.

Potential Launch Site Identified Near Kodinar

During an announcement at the Assembly, State Science and Technology Minister Arjun Modhwadia revealed that a location near Kodinar in Gir Somnath district has been earmarked as an ideal site for the proposed satellite launch center. The site, positioned between Diu and Kodinar on the Arabian Sea coast, has been thoroughly assessed for its capability to support future satellite launches, mirroring the functionality of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, India’s primary spaceport.

Government Ends Assessment Process for Infrastructure Suitability

The selection of the site has been facilitated by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorisation Center, which has acknowledged the area’s potential for establishing necessary space infrastructure. If realized, the facility could enhance India’s launch capacity and cater to the escalating demand for satellite deployment that is currently being experienced.

Alignment with Gujarat Space Technology Policy

This initiative is in line with the Gujarat Space Technology Policy that was introduced in April 2025, which makes Gujarat the first state in India to implement a dedicated space policy. The policy prioritizes the creation of a robust ecosystem for satellite research, manufacturing, and innovation, instrumental in attracting private investments into the space sector.

Development of Gujarat Space Park

As part of this expansive vision, the state is also in the process of developing the Gujarat Space Park, located near Sanand and spanning approximately 100 acres. This park is projected to accommodate companies engaged in satellite production and relevant technologies, effectively creating a hub for stakeholders in the space industry.

Private Investment in Satellite Manufacturing

A private entity has already initiated plans to establish a small satellite manufacturing unit with an investment of around ₹500 crore. Officials have indicated that this facility aims to manage the complete satellite lifecycle, which includes design, engineering, assembly, and testing, potentially establishing itself as India’s first comprehensive private satellite manufacturing plant.

Growing Global Demand for Satellite Services

The initiative comes at a time when global demand for satellites is increasing rapidly, driven by the need for internet, communication, and Earth observation services. Experts assert that bolstering domestic capabilities in manufacturing and launch infrastructure is essential for India to sustain its competitiveness in the global space arena.
