The Government of India has sanctioned 82 infrastructure projects worth Rs 4,703.81 crore across the North Eastern Region under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS), the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region said.
Introduced as a Central Sector Scheme in 2017–18 and restructured in 2022–23, NESIDS currently operates through two components: NESIDS (Roads) and NESIDS (Other Than Roads Infrastructure).
Projects Across Multiple Sectors
According to the ministry, the sanctioned projects span the last two financial years including FY 2023–24, FY 2024–25, and the ongoing FY 2025–26, as of January 31, 2026.
Under NESIDS (Roads), projects focus on building physical assets such as roads, bridges and related infrastructure to improve connectivity across the region. Under NESIDS (Other Than Roads Infrastructure), projects target sectors including healthcare, education, water supply, industry, sports and telecommunications.
State Level Empowered Committees of individual North Eastern states identify and recommend projects based on local needs, priorities and infrastructure gaps.
Monitoring To Ensure Timely Completion
The ministry said several measures have been put in place to ensure timely execution of sanctioned projects. These include periodic monitoring and field inspections by officials from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the North Eastern Council and Field Technical Support Units.
Regular review meetings with state governments are also conducted to address bottlenecks and accelerate progress.
Strengthened Quality Oversight
To enhance accountability and quality control, the ministry has introduced Project Quality Monitors and Third Party Technical Inspection Agencies. These mechanisms are intended to ensure that projects meet required standards while progressing on schedule.
NESIDS remains one of the Centre’s key initiatives aimed at bridging infrastructure deficits and promoting balanced development in the North Eastern states by supporting both connectivity projects and essential public infrastructure.
