The recent achievement by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has marked a notable progress in the Rishikesh-Karnprayag New Broad Gauge Rail Line Project. On September 12, 2026, the final breakthrough of Escape Tunnel 1 was successfully completed, which represents the 41st tunnel breakthrough in the ongoing project. This milestone was accomplished by the Rishikesh Project Implementation Unit of RVNL on Friday.

Escape Tunnel 1 covers a total length of 10.847 kilometres, making it the second-longest tunnel within the project. The completion of this tunnel highlights the organisation’s commitment to overcoming challenging terrain, especially given the demanding geological conditions that exist in the Himalayan region.

Challenges Encountered During Construction

The construction of Escape Tunnel 1 faced significant hurdles due to complex geological conditions in the Himalayas. The area is characterised by highly tectonised, multi-folded, and extensively faulted rock masses, which can complicate engineering efforts. Engineers encountered widespread shearing and locally intense crushing, making excavation particularly arduous.

Officials noted that these unfavourable geological characteristics led to the development of thick mylonite zones, a factor mainly linked to the tunnel’s close proximity to the Main Boundary Thrust (MBT). This geological feature has presented unique challenges for the construction team as they worked to ensure the tunnel’s structural integrity.

Despite the difficulties faced, the successful breakthrough signifies a crucial step towards maintaining the project’s timeline. The engineering teams have been devising solutions to mitigate issues posed by the geology, enabling continued advancements in the project.

Future Directions and Completing the Project

With a total of 41 tunnel breakthroughs completed to date, RVNL is steadily advancing towards the project’s completion. According to project officials, five more breakthroughs are anticipated within the following year, further bringing the rail line to fruition.
