Global Terrorism Index 2026 Map Sparks Row, Shows Parts of Jammu and Kashmir in China

The CSR Journal Magazine

A recently released map in the Global Terrorism Index 2026 appears to depict parts of Jammu and Kashmir as being within Chinese territory. The graphic, which illustrates terror activity in Pakistan and Afghanistan from 2007 to 2025, presents vague and generalized borders that obscure the distinctions within the region. Consequently, certain areas of Jammu and Kashmir seem to blend with regions labeled as part of China, raising concerns about territorial accuracy.

Decrease in Global Terrorism Rates

The 2026 Global Terrorism Index highlights a significant decline in worldwide terrorism incidents, reporting a 28% reduction in related deaths, totaling 5,582 in 2025. Additionally, the number of attacks fell by nearly 22%, reaching the lowest figures observed in years. An impressive total of 81 countries experienced improvements in their terrorism landscapes, and notably, mass-casualty attacks were absent during this period.

Disparities in Regional Trends

Despite the overall positive trend, the reductions are not uniform across all regions. Pakistan has emerged as the country most severely impacted by terrorism, primarily due to a rise in attacks attributed to the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) following the Taliban’s resurgence in Afghanistan. In contrast, India also recorded a significant drop in attacks, although it still ranks among the nations most affected by terrorism.

Western Nations Face Different Challenges

In Western countries, a contrasting trend has been observed. There has been an increase in politically motivated attacks and incidents involving lone actors. This shift suggests a changing landscape of terrorism, as the motivations and methods behind these attacks evolve.

Sub-Saharan Africa Remains a Major Concern

Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the epicenter of global terrorism, accounting for over half of the world’s terrorism-related deaths. While some countries, such as Burkina Faso, have seen a decline in attacks, the region as a whole remains severely affected by terrorism.

Geopolitical Tensions Could Affect Gains

The report advises caution regarding the sustainability of these gains, pointing to heightened geopolitical tensions as a potential threat to progress. Ongoing conflicts in South Asia, instability in the Sahel region, and renewed dangers from terrorist groups like ISIS could undermine recent achievements in reducing terrorism, making the current improvements potentially temporary.
