“Those With Genuine Documents Will Have Their Names Included”: BJP Leader Dilip Ghosh on SIR in West Bengal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Dilip Ghosh, a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), recently addressed the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal, asserting that only individuals with valid documentation will be included in the electoral rolls. Speaking to ANI, Ghosh underlined the futility of debating the SIR process, particularly in light of the objections raised by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has voiced strong opposition to the initiative.

Ghosh pointed out that the opposition from Banerjee and members of her party has complicated the situation. He noted that both the courts and the Election Commission of India (ECI) have been actively attempting to resolve issues arising from the SIR. Ghosh stated, “The rest – those who have genuine documents – should go through the system that has been told to them; everyone will get justice.”

Statistics of Changes to Voter Roll

The SIR process has resulted in significant modifications to the registered voters’ list in West Bengal. Ghosh highlighted an example from Bihar, where approximately 6.5 million voters were removed without incident or protest, leading to a successful election and government formation. He suggested that similar procedures in West Bengal should not be contentious.

According to available data, the total number of voters in West Bengal is now recorded at 7,04,59,284 (7.04 crore), which marks a reduction from the previously documented 7,66,37,529 (7.66 crore) voters before the SIR commenced. This indicates a change of over 61 lakh names on the voter rolls. Ghosh projected that the amount of removed names could reach up to 1 crore (10 million) as the process unfolds.

Additionally, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has raised concerns regarding the legitimacy of the SIR, alleging that the ECI is acting on behalf of the BJP to disenfranchise voters. According to TMC assertions, out of the 60 lakh voters who are currently under adjudication, approximately 27 lakh have already been removed from the lists.

Political Context and Upcoming Elections

The political climate in West Bengal remains charged as the TMC and BJP continue to clash over the SIR. TMC leaders, including Mamata Banerjee, have accused the BJP and ECI of undermining democratic processes by manipulating voter registrations, characterising the situation as a threat to electoral integrity. Banerjee was quoted expressing her dissatisfaction, stating that the actions of the BJP and ECI have rendered “Indian democracy into a cruel joke.”

This current edition of the SIR is being implemented under judicial supervision, which has introduced an additional layer of scrutiny in the electoral process. The forthcoming elections for the 294-seat West Bengal Assembly are set to take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the votes being counted on May 4. This context highlights the critical importance of the SIR in validating voter registration as the election dates approach.

As the SIR continues, all stakeholders are keenly observing how it will play out amid the tensions between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP, particularly with respect to the integrity of the voter rolls and the outcomes of the impending elections.
