Fast-Track Court Set Up in Zubeen Garg Murder Case for Swift Trial, Proceedings to Be Held Daily

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Guwahati High Court announced the establishment of a specialized fast-track sessions court to expedite the trial proceedings of the Zubeen Garg murder case. This decision comes after a formal request from the Assam government, as stated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sharmila Bhuyan, the current District Judge of Baksa, has been appointed to lead this dedicated court. In a statement shared on X, Sarma emphasized the importance of this initiative in the relentless pursuit of justice for the case.

Chief Minister Sarma highlighted that the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, Ashutosh Kumar, authorized Bhuyan’s nomination to oversee the court. The newly formed court will conduct daily hearings to ensure the trial proceeds without delays, helping to streamline the judicial process.

Singer Zubeen Garg, aged 52, tragically lost his life while swimming in Singapore on September 19, 2025. He was in the city as the cultural brand ambassador for the North East India Festival. Although authorities in Singapore reported no evidence of foul play regarding his death, Chief Minister Sarma contended that it should not be classified as an accident, instead describing it as a case of “plain and simple” murder.

Following these assertions, the Assam government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the circumstances surrounding Garg’s death. A case was registered that included multiple charges, such as criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and negligent homicide, with charges for murder added later. The SIT, part of the Assam Police’s Criminal Investigation Department, has investigated the incident and subsequently submitted a chargesheet to a local court naming seven individuals as accused.

Last month, the Assam cabinet advocated for the formation of a fast-track court specifically to speed up the trial process. Chief Minister Sarma expressed optimism that this new court will significantly enhance the efficiency of the judicial proceedings related to the case, reaffirming the government’s determination to provide timely justice to the affected parties.
