Farmers in Uttar Pradesh Don Bear Costumes to Protect Crops from Monkeys

The CSR Journal Magazine

In Sambhal district, Uttar Pradesh, farmers have resorted to wearing bear costumes as a novel strategy to deter monkeys that are damaging their crops. This creative measure was adopted by agricultural workers in Firozpur village, where monkey populations have become a significant threat to various crops, including potatoes and strawberries. A farmer named Dharambir shared his experiences, noting that the situation has escalated to a point where multiple farmers are employing this tactic to safeguard their livelihoods.

Dharambir expressed frustration over the persistent challenges posed by the monkeys, stating, “Monkeys cause a menace and eat potatoes and strawberries from our fields. There must be more than 100 monkeys here. This happens every day. Monkeys run away after seeing us like this… There should be some solution to this… 2-3 of us are doing this.” His concerns highlight the urgent need for effective and sustainable measures to address the problem.

Calls for Permanent Solutions from Authorities

Local authorities are acknowledging the issue, with Forest Ranger Manoj Kumar emphasizing the importance of taking decisive action to manage the monkey population. He remarked that merely scaring the monkeys away is not an enduring solution, as they tend to migrate to different areas. Kumar assured that the Forest Department is committed to implementing strategies to capture the monkeys and relocate them safely to their natural habitats.

“I do not have complete information regarding this. But I have come to know about this. Monkeys run away, but this is not a permanent solution. If they run away from one place, they will reach another… Concrete steps will have to be taken so that we can catch monkeys and release them into the jungle,” Kumar stated. His remarks underline the need for a coordinated response to manage wildlife interactions effectively.

Concerns of Banana Farmers in Tamil Nadu

In a separate issue affecting farmers, banana growers in Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, are facing financial distress due to a sudden drop in the prices of Nendran bananas. The farmers have urged government intervention to address their precarious situation. Rajendran, a local banana farmer, expressed concern that many fellow farmers had pledged valuables at private banks in anticipation of profits from this year’s harvest. The recent price fall has left them unable to meet loan repayments and fearing potential losses.

Rajendran explained, “Many farmers had pledged household jewellery in private banks, hoping to repay the loans with the profits from this season’s harvest. However, due to the sudden crash in prices, they are now unable even to pay the interest and fear they may only be able to redeem their pledged valuables next year.” The farmers are calling for the government to compensate those affected and are suggesting that direct procurement of bananas by the government could mitigate further losses.

Both situations highlight ongoing challenges faced by Indian farmers, calling attention to the pressing need for effective solutions that address both wildlife conflicts and market fluctuations in agriculture.
