Kolkata, India: At least 151 medicines from the Indian states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana and Gujarat have failed quality test in Kolkata. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has released the list in its latest notice, as per which several of these medicines have been found in Kolkata which came from other states.
The medicines were tested at the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata, and it has been found that they lack the necessary ingredients. In that case, it is unlikely that such medicines will cure the related diseases. The Drug Control Board has released the list with the batch number and said, “Do not buy these medicines.” Every retailer and wholesaler in West Bengal has also been prohibited from keeping these medicines.
Antibiotics, UTI & Cancer medicines fail quality test
The list of medicines rejected in the laboratory include important antibiotics, cancer medicines, and even medicines for urinary tract infections, which have failed the quality test. After a preliminary investigation, the Drug Control Board said that most of these ‘not standard quality’ medicines have come to Bengal from other states. The Heparin injection used for cancer patients at the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata could not pass the quality test. It has been found that this injection came to Bengal from Vadodara in Gujarat.
Azithromycin tablets could not pass the test. This important antibiotic manufactured by Gnosis Pharmaceuticals came to Bengal from Moginand village in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh.
The rejected drugs list includes the small intestine ulcer syrup Sucralfate (batch number RL2412-10). Which came to Bengal from Uttarakhand. Another important antibiotic Amoxycilin and Potassium Clavulanate (Non-standard quality antibiotic batch number BT240754) could not pass the quality test. It was found that this antibiotic came to Bengal from Solan in Himachal Pradesh.
Amikacin Sulphate Injection (batch number 24AM19), an extremely important antibiotic to prevent Urinary Tract Infections (UTI), has failed the quality test. Drug control officials said that this medicine came to Bengal from the factory of Telangana-based company Sai Parenteral’s Limited. Adulteration was also detected in Dexamethasone tablets at the Central Drug Laboratory in Kolkata. This medicine is manufactured by United Bioceuticals, is in Hyderabad.
