‘Every Memory Hurts’: Lt Vinay Narwal’s Father On Living With Loss After Pahalgam

The CSR Journal Magazine

The first anniversary of the Pahalgam terror attack, which resulted in the death of Lieutenant Vinay Narwal and twenty-five others, brings a poignant moment of reflection for his father, Rajesh Narwal. On April 22, 2025, he spoke about a year filled with grief while expressing pride in his son’s dedication to the country. Rajesh recounted how memories that once evoked happiness have turned into sources of profound sorrow.

Recalling cherished moments, Rajesh mentioned that occasions such as Vinay’s wedding and his many achievements in training and examinations have become exceptionally painful reminders. “The first few months brought a sense of false hope that he would return from duty. But as time passed, I realised the stark reality of loss,” he stated. For Rajesh, every recollection is a reminder of the gap left by his son.

The grieving father articulated the heavy emotional toll that the news of his son’s demise had taken on him. He described the moment when he learned of the tragedy, explaining the disbelief that accompanied the shock. “When I received the news, my life changed irreversibly. It felt as though he would eventually come back. This pain is compounded by the good memories that haunt me,” he explained, illustrating the complexities of his grief.

Government Response Following the Attack

In the wake of the Pahalgam attack, which was attributed to Pakistan-backed militants, Rajesh conveyed his struggle with the burden of his son’s loss. He highlighted that the grief is not only personal but shared by the nation, as Vinay was a soldier representing India. “This grief will accompany me for a lifetime, and it remains a significant challenge to shoulder. His sacrifice extends beyond my family; he was a soldier for the entire nation,” he remarked.

After the attack on April 22, 2025, which occurred in a scenic part of Jammu and Kashmir, Indian armed forces initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). This operation aimed to dismantle the networks behind the violence and respond decisively to the terrorists’ actions.

During this military response, nine major terror launchpads associated with groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen were destroyed. In retaliation, Pakistan engaged in drone attacks and shelling, resulting in a four-day conflict that showcased the military capabilities of both nations, before a ceasefire was agreed upon on May 10.

A Nationwide Tribute to the Victims

As the anniversary date arrives, the Indian Army has reiterated its commitment to combating terrorism, releasing a statement emphasising the need for a firm response when the boundaries of humanity are transgressed. The Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI) posted a message highlighting the necessity of justice and reaffirming that “India does not forget.” This sentiment reflects the collective memory of the victims and the tragic events of the previous year.

Rajesh, who continues to navigate his daily life while grappling with absence, emphasised that every day is a monumental challenge. His reflections provide an insight into the enduring impact of violence on families and the nation. The memory of his son, intertwined with the ongoing fight against terrorism, remains a testament to the sacrifices made by soldiers serving the country.

On this somber occasion, tributes are paid to all the victims of the Pahalgam attack, serving as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and security in India. The nation stands resolute in its commitment to honour those who have fallen while ensuring the safety of its citizens.
