The CSR Journal Magazine

The Election Commission of India has implemented a significant reshuffle of officials in West Bengal in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections. This decision comes as part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure that the electoral process is conducted smoothly during the two-phase polling scheduled for April 23 and April 29.

In a recent notification issued by the Commission, several officers have been assigned to various key districts across the state. Among the notable appointments, Surya Pratap Yadav, an Indian Police Service officer from the 2011 batch, has been designated as the Superintendent of Police for Barasat. Rakesh Singh from the 2014 batch of the State Police Service has been assigned to the role of Superintendent of Police for Coochbehar.

Additional appointments include Kumar Sunny Raj (IPS 2017), who will serve as the Superintendent of Police for Birbhum, and Ishani Paul (IPS 2013), who is set to take on the role of Superintendent of Police for Islampur. Other notable postings feature Pushpa (IPS 2012) as Superintendent of Police for Hooghly Rural, and Jaspreet Singh (IPS 2016) appointed as Superintendent of Police for Diamond Harbour.

The notification also specifies that Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao (IPS 2015) will assume the position of Deputy Commissioner for the Central Division of Kolkata. Papiya Sultana, also from the 2015 batch of the State Police Service, has been appointed as Superintendent of Police for Paschim Medinipur.

In a separate development, Siddh Nath Gupta has been announced as the new Director General of Police, succeeding Peeyush Pandey. The Commission has additionally named Ajay Kumar Nand as the Commissioner of Kolkata Police. Natarajan Ramesh Babu will take up the role of Director General of Correctional Services, while Ajay Mukund Ranade has been appointed as Additional Director General and Inspector General of Police focusing on Law and Order.

This reshuffle follows the formal announcement of the election schedule by the Election Commission for the Assembly elections set to take place in four states—West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Assam—along with the Union Territory of Puducherry. According to the announced schedule, voting in West Bengal has been organized in two phases on April 23 and April 29. In contrast, Kerala and Assam are slated to hold their elections in a single phase on April 9, while Tamil Nadu will also conduct its elections on April 23. Additionally, voting in Puducherry will take place on the same day as Kerala and Assam. The counting of votes for all four states and Puducherry is scheduled for May 4 as announced by the Election Commission.
