The Election Commission of India (ECI) has modernised its voter verification process to assist citizens in resolving discrepancies and preventing their names from being removed from electoral rolls. This initiative is part of an effort to streamline the verification system, making it more accessible and efficient for voters across the country.

To submit necessary documents online, voters can start by accessing the ECI Voter Service Portal. By authenticating themselves with their mobile number or Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) number, individuals can navigate to the section dedicated to SIR notice actions and upload the required valid proofs.

Additionally, many SIR notices now feature a QR code that, when scanned, directs individuals to the respective online document submission portal tailored to their records. For those who prefer using mobile devices, the official ECINET App and ECI citizen apps facilitate document upload directly from smartphones, further enhancing convenience.

Required Documentation for Different Age Groups

The type of documentation required for submission varies according to an individual’s date of birth. For those born before July 1, 1987, a self-attested document that confirms their date and place of birth is sufficient. Acceptable documents for this include an Aadhaar Card, Passport, Birth Certificate, or School Leaving Certificate.

Individuals born between July 1, 1987, and December 2, 2004, must upload birth and residence proof for both themselves and their parents. This requirement is intended to establish a clear generational lineage in electoral records.

For individuals born after December 2, 2004, a more extensive set of documents is necessary. Besides providing their own identity documents, they will also need to submit their parents’ documents and any additional citizenship information if one of the parents was born outside India.

Understanding the SIR Notice and Verification Process

The SIR notice serves as a notification of potential record discrepancies, such as mismatches, missing relative links, or unverified entries that may have been flagged as “Absent, Shifted, Dead, or Duplicate.” It is crucial to realise that receiving a notice does not imply deletion of one’s name; instead, it presents an opportunity to address any inaccuracies in the electoral records.

While submitting documents can be achieved entirely online, electoral registration officials may still require individuals to attend a brief personal hearing to conclude the verification process. Such hearings are designed to ensure that all necessary steps have been taken to confirm the validity of the registration.

After submitting documents, voters can return to the ECI Voter Service Portal to monitor the status of their submissions. If any issues arise during the submission process, or if the portal reflects an error, individuals are encouraged to contact their local Booth Level Officer (BLO) or reach out to the voter helpline at 1950 for prompt assistance.
