Elderly Muslim Cab Driver Forced and Threatened to Chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ in Agra

The CSR Journal Magazine

Agra authorities have opened an investigation after a disturbing video surfaced online showing a 64-year-old Muslim taxi driver being pressured to chant “Jai Shri Ram” near the Taj Mahal. The clip, which quickly spread across Instagram, has drawn widespread attention and condemnation.

The video features Mohammad Rais, a cab driver who regularly transports tourists to the iconic monument. In the recording, a young man is seen insisting that Rais chant the slogan, and when he refuses, the man filming issues a threat: “Jai Shri Ram bolega tu, 2–3 din mein.” Another user later reposted the clip with a caption labelling Rais a “terrorist.”

Police officials said the incident reportedly occurred near the Taj Mahal parking area, though the exact location is still being verified. Officers from Tajganj Police Station, along with the Cyber Cell, are now examining CCTV footage to identify everyone involved. An FIR has been registered, but investigators confirmed that no arrests have been made yet.

Incident Unfolds Amid PM’s Ayodhya Visit

The episode comes at a time of heightened religious sensitivity, coinciding with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Ayodhya for a flag-hoisting ceremony at the Ram Temple. Rais, who appeared clearly distressed in the video, had been working his usual shift of ferrying visitors when he was confronted.

According to police, one of the individuals seen in the clip has been identified, while another remains unknown. Officials noted that they have not received a written complaint but added that the inquiry will proceed based on available evidence.

The incident has added to growing concerns about harassment of elderly and working-class Muslims in public places, especially in major tourist zones across Uttar Pradesh.
