The Dual Mission of Rifleman Sakti Paul: Serving Nation and Community

The CSR Journal Magazine

For most individuals, donning a military uniform and serving their country represents the ultimate act of sacrifice and obligation. However, for Rifleman Sakti Paul of the Assam Rifles, his mission extends far beyond the traditional duties of a soldier. In addition to his service on the battlefield, he has taken up a second crucial fight: battling poverty and illiteracy among underprivileged children.

Early Life Shaped by Adversity

Born in Siliguri in 1991, Sakti’s childhood was marked by considerable hardship. After his father’s early death, he witnessed his mother’s daily struggle to support the family by selling kerosene oil and eggs. Many nights, he was forced to study under the faint light of a hurricane lamp, nurturing a dream for a better life. His persistence ultimately paid off when he successfully cleared the recruitment examination and joined the Indian Army in November 2009.

Distinguished Military Service

Over the years, Sakti has demonstrated immense courage while serving in some of the most challenging regions. His postings include the Myanmar border (2010–2013), assignments in Assam and Manipur, and even the honor of leading troops at the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi (2022). Despite the rigorous demands of military life, he has consistently remained connected to his humble origins.

Founding Vidyachaya Pathshala and Expanding Outreach

Driven by a desire to prevent children from enduring the same struggles he faced, Sakti founded “Vidyachaya Pathshala” in Kawakhali, Siliguri. For a decade, this modest school has served as a beacon of hope, providing free education to 80 underprivileged children.

His philanthropic efforts also reach Kolkata, where, in collaboration with the local NGO Ashar Alo-The Hope, he organizes complimentary classes for slum children near the abandoned railway quarters of Dum Dum Cantonment. Furthermore, he regularly orchestrates drives to distribute clothing and essential supplies to impoverished families living in the tea garden areas of North Bengal.

Viewing Education as National Duty

For Sakti Paul, the act of teaching is considered just as vital as patrolling the nation’s borders. With quiet conviction, he states, “I understand what it means to grow up with nothing. If my efforts can prevent even one child from giving up on their education, I feel I have truly honored my uniform.”

This soldier’s journey is a powerful reminder that true commitment involves not only guarding the country’s frontiers but also securing its future by elevating its most vulnerable citizens. Rifleman Sakti Paul’s story is a shining testament to courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment.
