Delhi is set to reintroduce double-decker buses, a nostalgic feature of the city’s transport system, after a nearly 40-year hiatus. The new fleet consists of electric, open-top tourist coaches aimed at promoting sustainable tourism. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will inaugurate the service from Vijay Chowk, enhancing the experience of sightseeing in the capital.

This initiative is designed to create a premium heritage experience, targeting tourists who are eager to see the city from an elevated vantage point. Residents will also find the service reminiscent of the past, while visitors can enjoy a comfortable way to explore major landmarks from the top deck.

Features of the New Double-Decker Buses

The reintroduced double-decker buses are entirely electric, contributing to zero emissions and reduced noise pollution on Delhi’s busy roads. Each bus is equipped to accommodate approximately 63 passengers. The open-top design provides unobstructed views of key sites in Central Delhi, enhancing the sightseeing experience.

Additionally, a live tour guide onboard will narrate engaging stories related to various landmarks during the journey, enriching the visit for both tourists and locals. The buses are adorned with vibrant graphics representing famous sites in the city, further amplifying their appeal.

Tour Schedule and Ticket Information

The tours are set to operate multiple times throughout the day, specifically in the morning and at around 6 pm in the evening. Currently, the route is fixed, although officials are considering the future implementation of a hop-on, hop-off model to provide more flexibility for tourists.

The ticket pricing for the service is structured as follows: adults are charged Rs 500, while children aged 6 to 12 can travel for Rs 300. The ticket prices encompass the guided tour, and tickets will be available for purchase via a dedicated app as well as at designated physical counters.

A Nostalgic Revival After Four Decades

The last time Delhi witnessed double-decker buses was in the 1960s and 1970s, which were part of the Delhi Transport Corporation’s ‘Suvidha’ service. These iconic red-and-green buses used to connect areas from Chandni Chowk to Connaught Place and ITO.

However, rising maintenance costs, safety concerns, and the challenge of navigating narrow streets led to the discontinuation of the service by the late 1980s. The current initiative marks a significant departure as these buses are intended solely for curated tourist experiences, blending nostalgia with modern electric technology.

Heritage Circuit Route Overview

The designated heritage circuit aims to illuminate national landmarks located in Central Delhi. The journey will commence near the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya and will encompass esteemed locations such as Kartavya Path, National War Memorial, Bharat Mandapam, the New Parliament Complex, Dilli Haat, India Gate, and other significant Central Vista sites.

The open upper deck allows passengers to feel a closer connection to the core of India’s democratic heritage, creating a unique perspective on the nation’s history and governance.

Government’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism

This project aligns with the Delhi government’s budgetary focus on enhancing tourism while reducing carbon emissions. By integrating electric transportation with a heritage experience, the initiative aims to bolster the city’s image on a global scale and provide visitors with an unforgettable yet environmentally responsible way to explore.
