Delhi Police Detain BJP Mahila Morcha Workers During Protest Over Allegations Against Congress MP

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Delhi Police detained workers from the BJP Mahila Morcha while they were protesting allegations of sexual harassment against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who is also a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University. The workers began their march from Laxmi Nagar Metro Station towards the Congress headquarters, demanding both the expulsion and arrest of Akoijam amid serious accusations involving female students. The protest was led by prominent figures including BJP Mahila Morcha National Secretary and Rajya Sabha MP Sangeeta Yadav.

Demands and Statements from Leaders

Sangeeta Yadav, addressing the crowd, called for immediate action against Akoijam, alleging that the Congress party was protecting an individual accused of serious misconduct. She highlighted the importance of defending the dignity of female students, stating, “At a prestigious educational institution like JNU, a person accused of sexually harassing female students under the guise of being a professor continues to move around freely.” Yadav’s comments underscored the perceived lack of accountability within the party.

Yogita Singh, Delhi BJP General Secretary, supported these sentiments, asserting the Congress failed to address the allegations adequately. She noted, “A sitting MP is accused of sexually harassing female students at JNU, and the Congress is shielding him.” Singh emphasised the need for justice, rejecting any compromise on the issue and indicating that the Mahila Morcha plans to sustain its protests until their demands are met.

Other leaders, such as State Vice President Sarika Jain and Mahila Morcha President Archana Gupta, were also present, amplifying the call for Akoijam’s dismissal and expressing their determination to pursue justice for the alleged victims. Jain remarked, “We are prepared to face arrest, but we will not retreat,” highlighting the seriousness of their intent.

Congress Party’s Response and JNU’s Action

In light of the escalating situation, the Jawaharlal Nehru University administration has taken decisive action by dismissing Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from service. This decision was made following an inquiry into the sexual harassment allegations, with the official order released. This dismissal has drawn attention to the ongoing issues of accountability in educational institutions, especially concerning the treatment of allegations against faculty members.

Despite the actions taken by JNU, the protestors remain adamant in their demands for further actions against Akoijam and the Congress party. They emphasised the need for a transparent and substantive response to the sexual harassment allegations, reflecting a broader concern regarding women’s safety and empowerment in academic environments.

The situation continues to unfold, and the BJP Mahila Morcha leaders have indicated that they will persist in their efforts until all parties involved take responsibility. The protest underscores the critical intersection of politics, education, and women’s rights in contemporary Indian society.
