CSR News: Hindustan Zinc Impacts 2.6 Million Lives Through Rural Development Initiatives

The CSR Journal Magazine

Hindustan Zinc’s ongoing efforts in rural Rajasthan have led to significant empowerment for women, impacting thousands of lives. Among those benefitting is Rajshree Chauhan, who once found her voice suppressed, unable to attend community meetings. Now, she manages an entire federation, earning a sustainable livelihood and uplifting women across her village.

Through the Sakhi initiative, Rajshree has acquired crucial skills in digital literacy, financial management, and organisational leadership. These competencies have transformed her trajectory from a participant to a community leader. She expresses her success with pride, stating that she can now stand independently.

Over 25,500 women in the region are similarly engaged in enhancing their household incomes via the Sakhi Utpadan Samiti. These women-led units are involved in the production of various goods, including edible products and textiles, which are marketed under local brands such as Daichi and Upaya.

Success in Sports and Education

Hindustan Zinc’s initiatives extend beyond women’s empowerment to fostering talent in sports and education. Mohammed Kaif is a prime example of this transformative journey. Starting on the streets of Makrana, he secured a scholarship at Hindustan Zinc’s AIFF-accredited Zinc Football Academy in Zawar in 2018. His dedication and training have led him to represent India on an international stage.

Mohammed acknowledges the academy as a significant turning point in his life, providing more than just athletic training; it instilled in him the belief that aspirations from small towns could be realised at the highest levels. His journey illustrates the wider potential for rural youth to achieve excellence in sports.

This sporting initiative goes beyond nurturing athlete skills; it serves as a platform that inspires young people to challenge societal stereotypes while believing in their potential to succeed.

Career Development Through Training Programmes

Another remarkable story of transformation is that of Deepika Devra, hailing from the village of Bhamniya Khet near Udaipur. Deepika participated in Hindustan Zinc’s Zinc Kaushal programme, focusing on skills in food and beverage services. This training provided her with industry-ready skills that eventually led to employment with notable hospitality brands.

Her journey from rural Rajasthan to working aboard Marella Cruises in Spain underscores the efficacy of the Zinc Kaushal initiative, which has successfully trained over 10,000 young individuals. The programme not only seeks to create job opportunities but also aims to build confidence and broaden aspirations among the youth.

These achievements highlight how skill development can enable talent to transcend geographical boundaries and access meaningful employment. The social initiatives by Hindustan Zinc encompass a holistic approach towards community enhancement, addressing education, health, sports, and sustainable livelihoods.

Comprehensive Community Development

Hindustan Zinc’s social impact projects span over 4,100 villages, directly affecting more than 2.6 million lives. The company’s approach integrates various aspects of community development, ensuring that every initiative contributes to a larger vision of growth and resilience.

Programmes like Shiksha Sambal and Unchi Udaan focus on improving educational quality for students in government schools, while others, such as Samadhan, encourage sustainable agricultural practices among farming families. Further efforts are directed towards enhancing preventive healthcare through mobile medical units and community hospitals, along with ensuring access to safe drinking water.

These varied initiatives are designed not as isolated activities but as interlinked strategies aimed at fostering long-term community resilience. Through their balanced approach, Hindustan Zinc demonstrates that genuine development is measured by the transformative impact on people’s lives rather than merely the number of programmes enacted.
