Cigarette Burn Marks and 51 Injuries Found on Kerala Toddler; Stepfather in Custody

The CSR Journal Magazine

The case concerning the death of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy in Kerala has escalated from a presumed accident into a confirmed homicide. Authorities in Thiruvananthapuram have detained the child’s stepfather after a detailed postmortem examination revealed that the toddler, identified as Arshid, did not suffer a fatal choking incident as initially reported. Instead, the examination indicated a pattern of severe physical abuse, leading to a murder investigation.

According to findings from the postmortem, Arshid’s body displayed signs of extensive violence. Medical professionals reported the presence of as many as 51 injuries, including burn marks from cigarettes and lighters, suggesting a history of prolonged mistreatment prior to his demise. The injuries were found to have caused internal bleeding in vital organs, raising alarms regarding repeated violence inflicted upon the child.

This new evidence stands in stark contrast to the version of events shared by the boy’s stepfather, Ashkar, which has been dismissed by investigators as fabricated. The nature of these findings has prompted outrage within the local community, questioning whether there were missed signs of abuse that could have potentially saved the child’s life.

Choking Claim Discredited

The incident first came to public attention when Ashkar brought Arshid to a hospital, alleging that the child had choked on food during a meal. After being transferred to SAT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, the toddler was pronounced dead. Initially, the Nedumangad Police classified the incident as an unnatural death; however, the new insights gained from the autopsy swiftly redirected the probe towards homicide.

Following the shocking turnaround in the investigation, police are now looking into the child’s mother, Akhila, who reportedly was attending a dance function in Tamil Nadu at the time of the incident. Investigators are keen to gather information regarding her role in the child’s care and her awareness of any alleged abusive behaviour by Ashkar.

Family members have claimed that Ashkar had a history of aggression towards Arshid, while also levelling accusations at Akhila for neglecting her duties as a caregiver. Authorities are currently reviewing the family’s history to ascertain if previous incidents of abuse had gone unreported or unnoticed.

Public Outcry and Social Media Harshness

The community’s frustration has also resonated across various social media platforms, where many users have expressed their horror at the situation and questioned how such treatment could have been overlooked. Following the release of the postmortem findings, social media users have mobilised to speak out against domestic violence and to advocate for children’s safety.

Interestingly, this case has garnered attention due to a prior social media video, recorded weeks ahead of Arshid’s passing. The clip featured the child with both hands in plaster casts, alongside his mother. When questioned about the injuries, Akhila reportedly stated that the boy had fallen from a bicycle. However, in light of the recent revelations of murder, individuals are now scrutinising whether those injuries were indicative of prior instances of abuse.

Investigators are expected to pursue leads regarding earlier incidents to better understand the circumstances surrounding Arshid’s tragic fate. As the investigation intensifies, efforts are concentrated on determining whether there were actionable signs that could have intervened in the cycle of violence faced by the young child.
